How anyone can mention the beautiful Spanish city of Alicante in the same breath as the Northern European ghetto of Torrevieja is beyond me. My favourite southern resort has to be Nerja. Of course it is commercialised - it is a holiday resort- but it still manages to retain charm and a Spanish ambiance. With a choice of beaches from several coves to the longer expanse of Burriana, its winding narrow streets, its range of eateries and watering holes to suit all tastes and wallets, the varied atmosphere in its barrios, this is one of my favourite places in the world and arguably the most picturesque resort in Spain. Just my opinion of course! There are also many delightful small resorts on the Costa Brava.
