Just doing some theorising at the moment, about buying a new car in the UK and then driving the old one out to Spain and leaving it there. If this has been covered before, please point me in the right direction; couldn't find the information doing a search. We are just getting fed up with the amount we are paying on hire cars for each trip and the regular trawl trying to find the best price for each trip with full/full fuel policy.
Our plan would be to do a single crossing to Santander and drive through Spain taking a few days leisurely drive and seeing some parts that we never normally see.
I understand that if it stays on UK plates, to keep it legal it needs to return home annually for its MOT, and insurance is an issue as it is out of the country too long to be covered. I believe Spanish car insurance covers the car not the driver so family members would also be able to drive it - can anybody confirm.
How do we get it registered in Spain and what cost is involved.
Or is the general opinion to forget it - sell it in the UK and use the money to put towards a car already in Spain.
We also have to consider the problem of transport between our Spanish home and the airport it we keep it at home, or airport parking at Malaga between trips.
Any thoughts on the subject?
Maddy
