8. Ban on speed camera detectors and jammers. The new legislation expressly prohibits the use of speed camera detectors: .... Drivers with GPS devices incorporating speed camera detection capabilities will have to deactivate this option.

What do they mean by 'detectors'? Most GPS devices, including in mobile phones, don't 'detect' cameras. They merely have a database of cameras on them, usually downloaded or on a CD or DVD in a built-in satnav. Is this what they mean by 'detection'?

Thread: New Double Taxation Agreement between Spain and UK

--------------------------------------
21 Oct 2012 4:06 PM:

I am absolutely no expert but I am not sure it can be right that you are supposed to have registered as 'resident' before getting on the padron. When I brought our tax free export car from the UK to Spain in April it had to be re-registered in Spain within two months of purchase in order to comply with UK VAT legislation. I was told that, I could not register the car in Spain unless I was on the padron. In May we returned to the UK. At that time, I was definitely not 'resident' in Spain and was still resident in the UK.

So either I was misinformed when I was told I had to be on the padron to register a car in Spain or it must be possible to be on the padron and not be 'resident'.

Aside from my own case, I believe that, if you keep a car in Spain, it must be on Spanish plates (forgetting that many expats ignore this at their peril). If it is right that you must be on the padron to register the car, what about all those people (OK maybe not many) who import their car to Spain but live in Spain, say, only 3 months a year?

EDIT Also, just found this on the British Embassy website

"You’ll find you need your padrón certificate to carry out various administrative tasks, such as register for healthcare, register your car with Spanish number plates or enrol your children in school."

Thread: Do I need a residencia or will a padron/nie be enough?

--------------------------------------
19 Sep 2012 10:23 AM:

 Hi all

We have recently moved into our house in Nueva Andalucia. We are going to have to do a lot of work to the garden, involving laying about 50 sq m of new turf. So far, we have only been told of a supplier in Barcelona who supplies a minimum of 100 sq m. Surely there must be suppliers nearer to us on the Costa del Sol who can supply this quantity at a reasonable price. We were told of one garden centre but their prices were excessive. We really need a garden supplies place.

Anyone who can help or give advice?

TIA

Norm

Thread: Buying turf in Marbella area

Just to add one other thing to consider. If you were thinking of buying a new car, don't forget that car companies, such as Audi, will sell you a new LHD car tax free which you then take to Spain within two months and pay IVA and CO2 based registraton tax. It's not a simple process but it MAY be quite a bit cheaper than buying new in Spain.

Good luck whatever you do.
