The number 18 is a significant one for most people; for me it takes on even greater importance.
18th Birthday
The first milestone towards adulthood.
You can become a soldier, sailor or airperson and possibly die fighting for your country (or while peace-keeping).
You can marry without the permission of your parents/guardian.
You can legally buy and alcoholic drinks in a pub, bar, restaurant or off-licence. (Note: in most states of the USA you may not do this legally until you are 21 - so you can die fighting for your country but you can't have a drink! Doh!)
You can get a driving licence for a car, if you pass your driving test. In my day it was 17, but they put the age up.
