In the News: Common Anti-Anxiety Drug Increases the Risk of Dementia
Monday, October 1, 2012 @ 11:01 PM

The recent news that benzodiazepine-type drugs such as diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan) can increase the risk of dementia has many people thinking twice about whether to continue taking them.

Many don’t realize that benzodiazepines are very addictive, and can cause a number of serious symptoms if a person tries to stop taking them all at once (commonly known as going "cold turkey”). Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome symptoms can range from generally unpleasant to life-threatening.

If you decide you would like to stop taking benzodiazepines, it is vital that you consult a medical professional who knows how to wean you off them safely!

And yes, there are many natural therapies and techniques to help you get rid of the need for them.

Hi Charlie

Thanks for posting this.

A very good warning about two "awful" but "prescribed" drugs!

My mother spent virtually her whole adult life from 16 until she died aged 36 (from Subarachnoid brain haemorrhage) on these two poisions. She was diagnosed aged 16 with a mental disorder by a quack (disputed by all who knew her and all other professionals) and thus spent the rest of her life on these pills...and many more. At one stage, even need to take other medication in the mornings, to wake herself up properly. Very sad and shame on those who kept her on them!

I actually thought Ativan had been banned. Clearly not but SHOULD BE. I cannot believe it is still available.

I would hate to think of others being destroyed the way my mum was. These tablets, any many like them are too freely prescribed. In my opinion unless there is a clear chemical imbalance or underlying medical issue causing mental illness/paranoia/depression/sleep disorders/suicidal behaviour etc these types of medication should actually be avoided. They can actually make symptoms worse.

Slightly different, but I have a rare visual epilepsy (from subarachnoid brain haemorrhages) which is hard to impossible to control and a consultant wanted to try and use tricylic antidepressants to control it!! NO WAY.

I'm not contributing to our "Prozac Nation".

Are you a psychiatrist, Ms. Holtermann?

Hi ElviriaDreamer,
I am very sorry to hear about your mother. If medical professionals did not know then of the dreadful consecuences these types of drugs can have, they certainly do now. Unfortunately, many of them know of nothing else, in large part thanks to the “ongoing education” they receive from the pharmaceutical companies.
The truth is, outside of Western medicine there have been natural therapies and treatments that have stood the test of time (sometimes by a thousand years or more), which have helped many people regain their health and happiness.
I do believe pharmaceuticals have their place in emergency medicine, as we’ve often seen them save lives.
I agree about the tricyclics; especiallly seeing as their use in your case would be one of “ ...We could try these and see if they might help”.
Keep up the good fight,
Charlie

For Patricia (Campana):
No, I am not a psychiatrist; however, I have spent a number of years researching the safety/ benefits of pharmaceuticals as well as plant-based compounds and other natural nutrient sources.
I also have a background in pharmacology as I was a cardio-pulmonary practitioner when I lived in the US.
