POLL: "Do think Sunday trading in Spain is a good idea?"
Tuesday, November 22, 2016 @ 12:49 PM

Sunday trading has been a subject of dispute in Spain over the past couple of years. In Valencia Sunday trading was abolished unless the shops fell within a very specific area of interest to tourists, such as the historic centre and the Museum of Arts and Science with the Aquarium.  It appears Alicante will be following suit in allowing shops and shopping centres to open on Sundays if they fall within an area of interest to tourists, which is basically most of Alicante. Each autonomous region decides it laws on opening hours but some people think that the governments are only thinking about the consumers and not the workers. Sunday trading has been going for a long time in the UK, do you think it has been successful? ; do you think it has changed peoples lives fro the better or for the worse or perhaps not at all… please cast your vote.

Yes, I think that is a good idea if it's well done. Because It would give work another people, for example, students that to study during week and they would have extra money. The people that to work all week should be free weekend. Also it would be more easy for people that during work during week and they don't have time to go to the shopping.

I've spoken to a few workers in my local Mercadona, they tell me they'd jump at the chance to work Sundays.

This is a family day... do we live to work, or work to live?
Shops are already open until late in the evening

It depends on your position but my son works in retail in the UK and has worked Sundays for quite some time. Initially, it was seen as a necessary evil but now it is basically that he has to work Sundays or, as he was told, find another job. I like the fact that shops are closed in Spain on Sundays, it's a lot less commercial here, just look at the shops devoid of Christmas shoppers. In the end, t's all down to money, a) for the owners and b) the employees.

Don't do it. Consumerism has ruined the UK. One of the things I love about Spain is the lack of it and the family values.

This issue is about two distinct groups, the shoppers and the workers. We in Cocentaina have a Kuups (re branded Vidal) that has not only decided to open on Sundays but opens from 06:00 until 24:00 everyday. It is a riding success. Old rules based on Sunday being a family day are outmoded. The work life pressures on parents and kids makes it a pipedream for many. Parents in Cocentaina now have more time to shop and can avoid the mad dash between school hours and work to grab groceries. For the worker prospective there is simply more work available. Ask some of the younger Spanish kids who have searched in vain for any sort of work if they would take work on a Sunday. Mike most people I would wish for a perfect world where everyone had everything they need, but we all are forced to live with the reality of pressure of our modern world.

When I want something I hate the fact the shop I want is closed but, how wonderful it is for all those other Sundays where I have got my act together and can simply enjoy the day.
On balance I would keep it special, family, friends, Spain.

I also think that with online shopping, which is 27/7, why bother changing.
Overall, Sunday, shops closed please.

I would, personally, don't like shops in Spain open at sundays. This has been in my country, Iceland, for decades, but Spain is a turistical country when turists feel no sundays at all. All day's are the same. Good for them but will change life and family structure of spanish families for good.

Some trading customs in Spain now seem archaic & out of step with modern Europe, especially in tourist areas. Many places are abandoning the odd opening/trading hours that allow a daily 2/3 hour siesta but the lack of Sunday & bank holiday (of which Spain has many!) trading, especially in supermarkets, can be frustrating & we still often get caught out! Adopting a similar Sunday trading approach as exists both in the UK & many other countries would allow a measure of freedom without staff necessarily being exploited. People would still have a choice regarding Sunday trading/working to a degree & it shouldn’t be forgotten than many would welcome the flexibility & potential extra cash 7 day trading can bring. As always, supply & demand would dictate its success or otherwise!

Sunday should be family day not dad home Sunday while Mam works this has destroyed family life in Ireland 🇮🇪 shops don't make any extra effort to money as people don't shop Fri or Saturday. They now wait till Sunday. As we had 24hr supermarkets at one time they stop because people were leaving shopping till all hours during the night to shop. Save family and life

I love Sundays in Spain because it is a day for family and relaxation. Learn from Britain, many shops are open 24/7 and still people feel the need to go to the shops. How much stuff do we need?, there is only a certain amount of money to spend surely. I vote no to keep Sundays special. The Spanish culture has survived this long why change

I vote to keep shops closed on Sundays but do away with the afternoon siesta closing, which still sometimes catches me out.

Absolutely not. People only have so much to spend so let's keep Sunday Special here in Spain as its only the expat community that would like it because that is now the norm in the U.K.
Sun,Sea and sand, picniks in the forest or the beach that is for Sunday's and we all have plenty of time to shop in the other six days.

I'm a British ex-pat and I am NOT in favour of shops opening on a Sunday. When it was first introduced in the UK, it was pitched as an opportunity for greater employment, as it was suggested that the profile of Sunday workers would be different to the rest of the week, i.e. part timers and students. These people also used to earn a premium for working on Sundays. However, this has been eroded over time, driven primarily by the large supermarkets and department stores, with Sunday working now part of a standard working week at standard rates of pay. I don't have children and I'm not religious, but I still feel that retaining Sunday as "a day of rest" should be maintained for individuals and families alike.

Why is Sunday any more special than any other day.

I have the choice to spend what ever time I wish with my family either shopping, eating out or simply relaxing at home.

Nobody has the right to tell me what days are special or to rest and relax, when I can work or not

Great to have the choice and very grateful that I have the choice

I think that Sunday should remain a day off .I am not religous but think that it is a day just once a week when you can share some free time with your family and friends, like it used to be in the UK years ago ,however I can see the reasons why people disagree with this due to the pressures of financial worries and unemployment .As I am almost at retirement age it is easy for me to say keep it special and I still believe it should be as 8 hours work is not going to make that much difference in real terms and people should be able to organise so that they shop on the saturday for what is required on Sunday .Just my opinion and know it wont go well with others.
