Thoughts of Eggcup

I find myself wondering about things sometimes and want to see if others feel the same.

Don't get walked over in Spain.
Monday, July 14, 2014 @ 3:44 PM

I would like to share with you some advice that has occurred to me from re-reading my last few posts on my Arguing Over Olives blog. This might be relevant for anyone starting up a new life in Spain (NB. I am generalising with this advice, to a certain extent, but it is based on my personal experience).

1. A lot of Spaniards, when they see a foreigner, see euro signs and can be quite annoying continually trying to flog you property. You will sometimes think you have made a friend because these people can be really friendly and invite you around for a meal etc. Watch out if after they have plied you with booze they start mentioning a piece of land or house they want to sell.

2. Don't be fooled by some Spaniards who look scruffy, but are razor sharp when it comes to money. These are particularly prevalent in rural areas.

3. Be highly suspect of rich people in Spain: where and how did they obtain all this wealth? Does it go back to the Franco days?

4. Sometimes, you have to be a bit false and 'keep in' with certain locals who wield a lot of power, at least until you've got what you need. Then, if they're bad people you can have a nice big row with them if you want.

5. Don't get walked over by trespassers and bullies. Stand up for yourself. You will thereby maintain your self-respect and also gain the respect of others.  Also, you will usually manage to get the bad ones to go away and find a different victim.

6. Don't aim to be liked at all costs, when you want to integrate. That way you'll get continually ripped off.

Feel free to add any other advice you might have to assist newcomers, in the comments section below.

'Feel free to add any other advice' you said, okay, here goes.

1. Don't buy a property near eggcup, it doesn't seem to be the same Spain that I know and love so much. This refers to some of the people she surrounds herself with as well.

2. Don't listen to her, if you will notice from her writings, she has done nothing but made big mistakes all along the way.

3. Definitely don't listen to her when she says in statement No. 4 'you have to be a bit false'. That is not the way you want to start your new life off in Spain. Be firm and honest from day one and stand your ground. Do you think you can 'gain the respect of others' by being 'a bit false'. Hmmm......

I don't accept your first statement either. If you think that it is in my builders best interest to rip me off. You are on cloud cuckoo land.

Just imagine what kind of status he would have in the village knowing that he has to live and see me practically every day of his life.

Do you really think it would be wise for him to charge me any different than anyone else. These people are not stupid and want continued and future business from us so it would be ridiculous for him to contemplate such an event. On top of that, don't you think that I would find out or realise that I'd been ripped off......

All you need to do is have your whits about you, be sensible and do things by the book, and as I have previously mentioned, use an abogado......

......sometimes I wonder......

Christ. Are you stalking me?

Don't go down that route eggcup, you invited me to this blog yesterday at 19:09pm by saying, Quote "I refer you to my latest post: 'Don't get walked over in Spain.' " Unquote......

Why don't you just comment on what I have pointed out instead of bringing in harsh words like 'stalking' which have no significance to your advice on new arrivals in Spain......

......besides which, if you didn't want my input then why invite me to read it in the first place...... Strange......

Are you a narcissist or what? I was inviting others who read my blogs, not you specifically.
And I chose not to comment on what you wrote about this post, because it didn't particularly interest me. For example, you went on about builders - having misread what I wrote about OWNERS of property trying to sell you things. But since you mention builders, I have used many over the years, both Spanish and British and they regularly rip people off. Clients also rip builders off by not paying them when they've completed jobs. And the legal route in Spain is a joke, so it is never as simple as using a lawyer, as you suggest.
You also misunderstand the purpose of a lot of what I write, which is to deliberately describe my mistakes so that others can learn from them. They learn nothing from you lying about the 2,600 people in your village being good. What? Not one paedophile? Not one wife-batterer? Not one thief? Not one bully? That is simply not the truth.

I have lived here since September 2008 and I know at least ninety five percent of the villagers, I mingle and party with them a lot of the time. We have a fiesta every month here except February......

When a fiesta comes around our village triples or quadruples with people, still no trouble.

There has been one, yes one incident of crime here in all of that time. An outsider stole some old tools from the ex-mayors weekend finca which is five miles from the village about three years ago.

Not that I have to prove anything to you but I swear that is the only crime I have heard about in nearly six years.

As I mentioned earlier, you really are painting a fantastic holiday situation for your clients aren't you.

I doubt very much if anybody would want to RISK going on holiday to one of your homes after what you say about the environment.

Wow!...... I thought a holiday was to wind down, a bit of peace and quiet and to get away from it all. What, with all those paedophiles, wife-batterers, thieves and bullies that you seem to know of I think I'd rather go on holiday to Syria......

Good luck with renting your erm 'holiday' homes out in the future......

I may start deleting your comments soon, because you keep hi-jacking my posts.
This discourages other, more helpful people from taking part; people who could add useful tips for newcomers, rather than boast about how great their area is.

Of course, by all means if you don't want people to know the truth.

It's your blog and I'm sorry for hijacking it. I'm sure you mean well but I just don't experience what you see in your day to day life......

Do what ever you wish with my comments, there is no need for me to always voice what other people must know already.

Have a great day......
