A Glimpse of Mallorca
Wednesday, March 4, 2015 @ 11:12 AM

The sun set over Barcelona on Monday evening with this spectacular view of Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana mountains, floating on top of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Balearic Island peaks are only visible from the Catalan capital under a certain combination of weather conditions, explains meteorologist Alfons Puertas, who took the image from the city’s Fabra Observatory. These are: a clean atmosphere allowing good visibility, the absence of clouds over the island and a scarcity of light in Barcelona at sundown, and the presence of middle-level clouds.

Around 206 kilometers, or 110 nautical miles, separates the Mallorcan mountains from the mainland city.
