Hi Michael
How spooky is this
I have just been speaking to my son who is thinking of buying a car in Spain. Then leaving it ar Murcia airport until Corvera is open.
I was just about to start a thread for information & how much it costs to buy a jeep type car. Tax insurance etc. Because we would use it too & would be available to anyone renting our appartment we would need to know if we have to apply for multi use.
So if any one has some ideas. Also the cost of keeping it at the airport please..
All advice greatfully recieved
Thanks
Jan & Dan

You can keep a car at the offsite airport car parks fromless than 300e pa. shop around, i did my deal with claus parking at alicante for 300e pa but you can get cheaper.
I looked at buying in the uk as 2nd hand car hire prices in spain are very expensive but the driving over costs including petrol tolls and ferry costs as well as of course the regiatration costs dont really make it viable imho
Buying new in spain seems best value for money as if you buying 2nd hand you dont really know what you are getting as we dont seem to have the aa check system over here so be very careful.

I really dont know why I am trying to sort this out when he & his girl friend have computers of their own
I suppose it a Mom thing

When considering what car to buy also consider the cost of insurance.... generally the bigger the engine the more expensive the insurance...... my perfect insurance car is a 1.1 Opel Corsa....

Hi all,
I looked into this some months ago. Looked at cost of buying here, and travelling then leaving car in Murcia. You are only allowed to keep a foriegn car there for a set period (think it may be 6 or 12 months) before you have to transfer it to Spanish plates. Cost about 1000 plus euro's. A lot of people will tell you the police there dont bother with looking at uk plated cars (currently turn a blind eye).. Local councils are trying to get as much revenue as they can due to ongoing "Austerity measures". So trust me that will change. So for me best option was to buy one there and leave it there. As Georgeeh says. Cost of leaving it at airport approx 300 euro's per annum.
Can be a problem with this as in my case. Sometimes I can get a much cheaper flight to Alicante than to Murcia. Sometimes (winter months) Ryanair do not fly to Murcia. So "BEWARE" only if you constantly fly into one airport would this be beneficial. Cost of taxi's means cheaper to hire car on short stays. Over my number of visits over 12 month period, cheaper to stick with car hire.
Waiting to see what happens with Corvera. Who flys there from L'pool and will it be consistent.
Just thought I'd part with my feesabilty studies on this matter.

Another alterative if you are a frequent visitor would be to buy a Spanish car and leave it on Condado, then when you are visiting arrange for your key holder or trusted friend to pick you up at the airport in your own vehicle, then at the end of another visit to this wonderful place you repeat the exercise and your car is back at Condado safe and sound till your next visit---simples!!

Hi MGK
Great idea.
I will need to discuss that with our key holder to see how she feels.
Could be difficult for her in the busy times but as we do not go over during school holiday times it could be a possibility.
Thanks Jan

Hi Jan
Yes it just came to me in a flash!! seriously though as cars here are insured as the car not the individual as long as you meet the age critiria [hope i spelt that right] no problem in my case , and you have the owners permission there shouldn't be a problem

Hi all,
Already looked at this option. "Friends?" Not always there when I am (visistors like myself). Permanent resident friends? Would not impose on them to be my free taxi service even if they were available. If they do it for me they would have to do it for many., so would not impose. Keyholder? Has a business to run and at the times I visist they will be extremely busy themselves.
Not being negative. Just feel you have to be independent. in this matter. Nice if and when friends step in when NEEDED (and here they do), but not there to be imposed upon imho.

Hi Jim
As I believe we have the same key holder I think you are correct.
It would not be right to expect this service unless we offered to pay for time etc but again I doubt if it would be convenient
However there is always the possibility of another person she knows who would be willing to help. maybe

Hi Jan & Frank
Three way conversation here!
I can see the pro's and con's never the less as the resort continues to expand I am sure there will be people with time on their hands who could operate such a service, even cleaning / valeting the vehicles for the owners btwn visits

Hi
Isn’t there an issue with getting a Padron from Alhama Council in so far as in Alhama you have to be resident for at least 6 months of the year to obtain a Padron and without a Padron you will not be able to Tax your car and also may well have difficulty buying and insuring a car?
I am not sure how accurate the above information is so if someone has the definitive answers would be helpful.
Phil
