Hi everyone
Has anyone had any thoughts about joining the San Javier golf society at all? Have just been reading the clubmurcia website & it seems a lot of work to set up our own society - anyone any thoughts?

Helen,
Have just been in SDR for the past 2 weeks and played Roda 3 times. Great course with some tough par 3's in particular! Also heard La Serena is open (officially supposed to start in October).
San Javier society was mentioned whilst I was there and the impression given was very good. It is very established with a good membership and involvement in regional leagues etc.
Ideally we would set up our own SDR society and join in the same leagues etc. It seems that societies get a discount at all of the courses. Roda said that they offer 20% discount as a matter of course though I suppose this might be negotiable if we used Roda as a base. The problem at the moment is that the majority of SDR owners are not permanent residents so that the 'core' of golfers is limited. I would think that when the development is complete in 2 or 3 years time there will be more than enough residents and frequent visitors to run our own society. It would be helpful if we really knew how many people are interested and would join an SDR society but the only 'meeting' points in SDR at present are the community groups and the municipal bar. Perhaps when the shops start opening this will improve.
I think we should try to start some kind of interest list (perhaps each community could ask its members) but in the end we will need someone based in SDR to run with the idea. In the meantime perhaps your suggestion of San Javier g.s. is the best option.

Hi Helen
Nice to know I can talk golf on this thread without being reminded of the problems people are having with their completions etc. As you know I invited discussion on the HT site, but one or two sharp reminders that there were more important things than golf caused me to back down a little!
O.K I can tell you on my last visit, my friend who lives in L.A and I attended a San Javier G.S social evening held at the Golf driving range over there. Susan also attended. There were over 140 there and it coincided with the presentations from the previous outing. Fantastic evening and we made a lot of friends. If this is typical of the involvement we could achieve by paying 20 Euros a year, then for me, starting our own society would be a lot of unnecessary work. The committee does all of the arranging of venues and presentations. In many cases where courses are a distance away, there is organised travel and social events such as we attended involved a terrific buffet and cabaret ( two girls who sang great and looked even better! ) all for 7 Euros per head.....I rest my case!

Having just completed (wont mention it again!!) we are busy with the usual things (furnature etc) but will confirm I am a keen golfer and would love to be part of a golf society. Look forward to the more important golf agenda (after I have taken the wife shopping).

Hi everyone - thanks for the replies (& also the pms I've received). It always seems to me that there is a lot of interest in a golf society &, although having our own would be great, am not sure if anyone would have the time or inclination to take it forward. (Although if anyone wants to volunteer feel free!). Thats why San Javier society came to mind.
Don't laugh John (why can I hear you already?) but on the basis of 'if I can't beat them, join them' - am starting golf lessons next week! Don't think anyone will have anything to worry about for a time! - but watch out, am keen! 19th looks very inviting.....................!
For those that don't know me, my husband Brian is a big golfer who literally climbs the walls if seperated from his clubs for any length of time. Having spent quite a bit of time on Roda over the summer (& have booked longer for next year - hurray!) there seems to be a lot of golfers around but no way of knowing who is there at the same time. Could we do this through San Javier society or not - anyone know? Would be nice to play a round (so to speak!) with the neighbours.
An interest list could be a good idea too - I don't mind compiling email addresses - also if people sent dates of when they are over could hook people up - what do you think?

As I understand it the San Javier society sets up 'outings' once every 2 weeks at courses around the area. If you are in SDR for a long stretch of time that could work well but for those who get over for shorter periods its not likely to solve the problem.
A 'who's in town' diary could be a great idea and if Helen is happy to co-ordinate the list then I think we might have the beginnings of our own group at least for getting up a 4 ball during a visit.
Helen, you can put me on your list for the week of 8 to 15 October. Will send my e-mail address by pm.

Hi everyone
Nigel got your email & have replied - you're first on the list! Now all we need is others to join in!
We are in Roda 22/10 for a week if that corresponds with anyone else - then New Year - apparently John will be on the 1st tee Roda Golf 8am sharp on 1st Jan :) good luck is all I can say!!! (why can't I see that happening!)
Will put another message on hol truth website to try to generate more interest - (anybody know if I can just put my email address on here? - or is that not a good idea?)

Should have said before - if anyone knows my email address, I have no problem with you passing it on to anyone who's interested (in golf that is! suddenly realised how that sounded!)

Hi Helen
Taking up golf eh!....Remind me to take out more life insurance!!
Anyway tell Brian we are arriving on the evening of the 27th, so if he wants a game on the 28th..and anybody else to make up a fourball, lets get it on. I played last time I was there, course in great shape and I had a good day shooting a net 71 ( with a broken ankle) Don't suppose it will happen again, so 5 Euros a corner?
I agree with your idea of an ongoing log identifying who is going to be there, as long as we do this on your PM to avoid any security issues.
Look forward to meeting up again, but must get back to the pool right now as we are finishing off our Asia trip in Koh Samui right now.
Best Wishes
John

Hi John
Good grief - we leave Roda 28th! Bad timing again! A net 71 with a broken ankle huh - don't think you'll be worried by me for a while but Brian will give you a run for your money - when we eventually get the dates right of course!
First golf lesson tomorrow :) - you should be safe in Koh Samui (jammy devil) - I'll suprise you all (maybe!). Having watched the Ryder Cup am inspired that I could do that (stop laughing). I'd probably be better off handing round the life insurance forms as you say!
Am slowly building up a list of people looking for rounds when in Roda - anyone else want to join in send me your dates & email addresses.
Anyone played any of the other courses? All info gratefully received.
Helen

Hi Everyone
Only just logged onto site after completing our purchase at Roda. I am a keen golfer and would certainly like to be part of a wider circle. Have booked to come over on 19th November and would love to play perhaps a couple of rounds on 20th and 21st as this is only a fleeting visit.
I plan to stay at our place probably 4/5 weeks spread throughout next year and where it would be good to arrange some more golf and get to know more people as part of a community. Although I also plan to bring friends with me who also play golf.
I would be pleased to join a society although as one of the other correspondents says I could only be a frequent 'visitor' playing no more than 20 or so times a year.
Look forward to hearing from anyone especially if we can get together for golf on 20th November.

Hi Steve
Think your comments relate to the vast majority of us - would love to spend more time in Roda but work & school commitments get in the way. Have sent you a pm with my email address.
Think at the moment organising our own society isn't really feasible & would require someone living in Roda full time to take it forward, so keeping in touch through the internet & email seems the best for now. Hopefully over the course of time as more people complete on their properties (as seems to be the case now) we can build up a network of golfers.
John - fyi - life insurance claims were not needed !- 1st golf lesson went really well & am going again (have found a few muscles I didn't know I had though!) Ball even went in the right direction on a couple of occasions!

Hi Helen
Good news about your lesson , keep it up. Arrived back from our trip today with only one of three suitcases...The new Bangkok airport which only opened 3 days ago is breathtaking in size, but is in a state of complete and utter chaos so I'm not surprised they lost our luggage.
As I told you I am in Roda from 27th October for about 10 days so if there is anyone there at the same time I'd be happy to make up. I suggest we compile an e-mail group of golfers, however many that is, which can be circulated to all participants and then if there is not a scheduled San Javier GS event , anyone on that list can send one email which will reach everybody in one fell swoop which will establish whether a game is possible.
Anyway sorry we are arriving as you are leaving, maybe we'll see you for a drink on the night of the 27th?
John

Darn good idea John - I'll tally up all the names & email addresses & send them out to everybody who has expressed an interest in a block email later tonight. Hope this is OK with everyone else - if I make a mistake & include / exclude anyone, please let me know.
Also anyone else thats interested, please get in touch.
Would be great to meet up 27th - will email you off this forum.

Hi Helen,
We were out at Roda last week (lovely) and I went to see Bob at San Javier golf society. Said it would be no problem to join (20 Euros) they have about 300 members, a driving range, spare clubs, weekly competions, a pro, tuition for anyone wanting to start or improve, buy new clubs or second hand, a nice clubhouse patio area (functions weekly) and he said a nine hole course starting next year.
I need to get my handicap back and this they can help with as well, so think I will join next time. He gave me an application form (need passport photo which can also be obtained on their web site).
We walked round Roda last wednesday with Sam Torrence and a couple of Spanish professionals and a film crew so had a good look at the course (looks in great condition).
Also played the nine hole par three canyon course at Mosa Trajectum (very difficult as there are no fairways)

Hi Paul
Can't think how you came up with 'sanmiguel'!! :)
San Javier golf society sounds like it could be a road to go down but might be more use when we are in Roda for several weeks as opposed to a week here & there. 20 Euros to join is a good price.
Wondered if you would be there when Sam Torrence was at Roda Golf (was it the official opening?). Brian enjoyed playing the course in Aug but did find it a bit breezy down the first 9 (mind you with the course he plays in York, should be used to a howling gale!). Mosa sounds an absolute nightmare (for me at least) - will stick to the relative safety of fairways for the time being.
Already added you onto the golf list so you should have received an email (or 2) by now. Glad to hear you had a good time in Roda - should be cooling down it bit now so possibly better golfing weather. Brian has left a set of clubs out there so expect he will be disappearing next door on a fairly regular basis.

Paul, have been thinking about your comments re Mosa Trajectum - am I right in thinking thats the place you pass on the way to Murcia that always reminds me of the Flintstones? The one with the strange stone boundary that looks like Barney Rubble will appear at any time? Presume with it being a par 3 course you just hit to the green (hopefully).
Was talking to the club pro this am - he played a course in Dubai (not a par 3) that didn't have fairways - had to hit to 'islands' & then on to the green - OK if you're a low handicap player but high handicaps would have a nightmare.
