We are in the process of buying a place and will require spanish bank account for utilities etc. Who do you bank with and why? Is there an ATM on site? Or where us the nearest? Thanks in advance

Are you buying through an agent?
If so they should set this up as part of the service if they are reputable, no cashpoint on site but there are a couple of banks down the road on Camposol, La Caixa is fine.

When we purchased back in March our solicitors put us in touch with the Sabadell branch in Puerto de Mazarron. We were able to set eveything up remotely and all went very smoothly. The staff in the branch are very helpful and friendly. Not sure though were the nearest Sabadell ATM is in relation to Condado. There may be one in Camposol.

Worth noting, we were originally with Halifax Espania, who then merged with Lloyds International and have had great service from the branch in Puerto de Mazzaron. We now have been informed that Lloyds have sold their Spanish business to Sabadell who also have a branch in the port. I wonder which branch will close when they formally merge. Also be careful which cash point you use. Always try and opt for one that is Servi Red as all the others have put their cash withdrawal fees up to 12 Euros, a bit pricey!

Have you checked the charges for Sabadell? When we were non resident they were very expensive. They offer a free account at the moment ( Expansion Account) but you need to pay in 750 Euro per month. Santander also offer a free account if you pay in a pension.
Also take care with Servired as there are now often charges if you use a different Servired bank. This applies to Sabadell and Santander banks.

we have just opened an expansion account with Sabadell and were advised to use the servired network but if you withdraw over 100 euro at a time there is no charge.
they will also honour direct debits from utility companys up to the value of 300 eurowithout charge if you don't have enough funds in your account. yes you do have to deposit 700 euro per month but the way we look at it thats my spending money when we come out to CDA

We're with Bankia (formerly Bancaja) and have been left high and dry in the region after the closure of the branches in Mazarron, Cartagena & Torre Pacheco. I think the nearest one is in Torrevieja of all places
I've given up hope of getting free ATM withdrawls unless we fly into Alicante as they have an ATM on the top floor Departures
I just try and take cash out with us and use the debit card for the groceries / meals etc
