We're considering getting contents insurance - but does anyone know if we're responsible for getting our own individual buildings insurance - or is this done collectively by everyone

If you have a mortgage, buildings insurance is usually a prerequisite of the loan advance and your provider will offer you insurance with the mortgage offer. If you are lucky enough to be buying for cash then you should arrange your own insurance.
