There are various providers of 3G broadband services in Spain. Vodafone, Movistar, Orange, etc. I am not sure about coverage in your area but I assume any of those should be ok. I think you can always check on the respective websites for coverage once you know exactly where you will be living. You can also check out their rates on their sites too.

I know there has been some discussion around this, but can anyone tell me what the best options are for someone spending maybe 5 weeks out in Spain throughout the year. The trips vary from a couple of days to 2 weeks in length. I will have a laptop based out there, but no telephone line. I am based in the Benalmadena area, and would like to know what the best PAYG deals are for use with a broadband USB dongle. Anyone familiar?
Thanks, Dave

Fultond in your case you maybe better going for something like the YOIGO deal where you pay per day. I think the cost is 3 euros for the day unlimited usage. With Vodafone etc you have to buy 1 month(unlimited usage) or 3 months( 1gb) so it will time out between visits. Might even be worth your while having a couple of dongles then for short visits use YOIGO and for longer visits use the likes of Vodafone.

Thanks Crispy Cod
I have to say it is a little disappointing. I was hoping there would be deals like in the UK. Here you can buy GB of usage and then just use it as you need it, and top up as necessary. On most they expire if not used over a 6 month period, but that would be no problem. Perhaps YOIGO is the nearest I can get to that. I will research their details thanks.

Hi Dave,
Have you tried a usb wireless adapter for your laptop you might be able to pickup a signal from VIP hotspots or Y-Internet both are PAYG and have daily, weekly + monthly rates available.I'm in Benalmadena Arenal Golf not too far away from you and can pick up both with a wireless adapter.A lot depends on the nearest hotspot antenna to your apartment both companies also install an external antenna to receive their signal which might be an option also.

Thanks for the info Neutral. We are actually based in Torrequebrada and I tried connecting to available networks the last time we visited. There were no free networks available, but I did pick up various other ones. I didn't look at which ones they were in any detail, but now you have mentioned a couple I will have a closer look on my next visit.

Spain's technology for communications is around 6 years behind the UK so you need to bear that in mind the highest GB here is currently 6, whereas in the UK you will be getting at least double that

You'll probably need a USB Booster to access a hotspot.
Let me know if you need any help.

I bought a Vodafone dongle. Cost in Spain 60E for 1GB,cost in UK £15 for 3GB.........
Spain is like a third world country in terms of communication costs.

Hi, can anyone give me an idea of the current PAYG dongle rates offered?
I will be staying in an apartment in La Quinta near Puerto Banus for 10 days during the world cup and would like internet access. Is the broadband coverage up there likely to be good enough, and how might I find out which providers offer the best coverage up there?
Many thanks

Hi Fulton and Michael
Contact Y-Internet as they specialise in providing coverage to "awkward areas" that cannot get coverage. I live in Campo Mijas and fought with Telefonica for nearly 10 years to get broadband connection only to be told our house was being shielded by 5 fott from the Mijas Mountains do they could not help!
We then tried the Vodaphone dongle and found the download/upload speeds sooo slow and sometimes it was a struggle to get a connection. Michael, we also have an apartment in Altos de La Quinta and experienced the same problem with internet connection, although depending on which development you are staying on up there, you can log on to their own internet and pay a weekly charge, although do check the prices because they will not be cheap!
Y Internet have transmitters/receivers up and down the coast and they offer a short term solution for holidaymakers or residents staying for months at a time.

Hi Michael,
If you need any assistance let me know. I install Wireless Internet on the coast and can recommend the best solution for you.
If you want to connect to a hotspot you will probably need a higher powered antennae than the standard one in your laptop.
Feel free to contact me for any questions on the best way to connect.

Thanks Neil for your advice.
I really just want a simple connection with no hassle for the 10 days.do you think it is worth buying a PAYG dongle then. If so which is the best coverage?
thanks

Dear All,
Daughter's success with dongle recently at La Quinta was provided by Orange who were extremely helpful visiting the apartment to test before sale.
The rate was good too compared to neighbours, it seemed to be a new scheme or tariff.
Regards
Norman
