When you need to type in Spanish, there is an easy way to get accented letters. And you don't have to switch your entire system over to a Spanish keyboard. These "Alt" functions will allow you to use accented letters and other Spanish symbols on your keyboard. These shortcuts are particularly helpful when you are just starting to learn Spanish and can't perform at a fluent level yet.
To get these to work properly, make sure you hold down the "Alt" key the entire time you type in the numbers.

A quicker way to get á, é, í, ó, ú is to hold down the alt gr key - to the right of the space bar - and tap the letter you want under the stress mark, release alt gr.

Still a lot easier to select the language option from the taskbar than trying to remember all those codes, but then again I suppose it's horses for courses.

In Microsoft Word you can assign keys yourself. Go to INSERT Open the SYMBOL tab and select the accented letter, then select KEYBOARD SHORTCUT. There's a box that says: PRESS NEW KEYBOARD SHORTCUT.
For example, for the
¿
I have set a keyboard shortcut as ctrl and the normal ?
You just have to take care that you don't reassign keys that you use for other things.
Then all you do when you are typing (in Word) you hold down the ctrl key and the letter to get your accented letter.
This doesn't work on the web though.
Hope this is useful.

I find the codes easiest. There are also bits of software that allow you to click the symbols using your mouse as you type.

To Diane & Jo back to June 2010 (I catch up eventually!) - Many thanks
IT WORKS !!! - ALT-GR KEY + a, e, i, o + u = á, é í ó + ú Plus I went on to find ALT-GR KEY + SHIFT + ? and got the upside down ? (but for some reason this isn't working on the web, only in WORD. Oh well, who said life was perfect eh?
Happy travelling everyone.

Why not add Spanish to WORD and then type in WORD and spellcheck in Spanish.

ooooo! Didn't realise I had that option, but having said that, my spanish (particularly my written spanish) isn't good enough to type full docs - still only using the odd words I'm afraid, but I also use Google Translate which is brilliant. I know that the translation probably isn't going to be grammatically correct, but it gets the general meaning over and helps communication. I reckon the ALT GR will come in useful for the odd words I need. Thanks for taking the time to reply though, and when my spanish improves, I'll bear in mind changing Word over. Cheers.
