I have just read........ready to open in the first quarter of 2011.
The new terminal will double the capacity of Alicante airport to 20 million passengers a year
All is practically ready for the opening of the new terminal at the El Altet airport in Alicante. The new facility will double to capacity of the airport to be able to handle 20 million passengers a year, and is due to come into full operation in the first quarter of next year.
On Saturday the site was visited by the Secretary of State for Transport, Concepción Gutiérrez, who was accompanied by the President of AENA, the Spanish Airport Authority, Juan Lema.
The new terminal is part of the so-called Plan Levante from the Development Ministry to modernise airport infrastructures.
The total cost of the Alicante work between 2004 and 2011 is 570 million €, of which 384 million have gone on the new terminal. It has a new line of boarding gates parallel to the runway, and a processing building which is at right angles. It covers 333,500 square metres, some six times the area of the current terminals one and two. It will have 16 airline ‘fingers’ compared to the five at present.
A 15,500 square metre departures hall will have 96 check in desks compared to the 52 currently, while in arrival passengers will see 14 luggage carousels.
Currently a series of tests of the different facilities are underway, including of the luggage system which can handle 7,680 suitcases an hour.
Also being tested is a new car park which will add 4,200 spaces to the 2,000 now.
New access roads and new power facilities are also being completed to serve the new terminal.
Looks like a fantastic building
