UK Televisions in Spain
The Comments |
Hi There, we are in the final throes of purchasing our apartment in Spain.
The current owners are leaving a small television set but we would prefer something a bit bigger/more modern and were thinking we would purchase a new set in the UK and transport it over along with our other stuff.
However, we were told a couple of days ago that a UK set will not work properly in Spain (something to do with the sound).
Does anyone know for sure if it would work or not as it's a lot of money to spend only to discover later that it won't work.

We purchased our first TV in Spain, but recently took one over from the UK (built in Freeview). It works fine, but doesn't pick up UK Freeview of course, but the Spanish equivalent. To get UK programmes you will need a dish (usually quite a big one) and an appropriate set top box. We have these for our main TV and recently had them connected to the TV in the bedroom and it works fine on that as well.

TVs purchased in the UK with built-in Freeview receivers purchased in the UK will not perform satisfactorily in Spain.
the Spanish have their own version of Freeview called TDT.
Many of the TDT programmes are broadcast on Ch69 and that channel may not perform well on a UK purchased TV.
Best buy one over here... prices are generally on a par with the UK. Try Carrefour or Alcampo or Mediamarkt.
Alternatively if you must buy in the UK get one that isnt Freeview equipped and buy a TDT box over here. Prices start from around 30 Euros.

A lot of tv's in the UK are DVB, but you can get DVB-T which will give you the elusive channel 69. It's still slightly cheaper to buy in the UK than in Spain. Our Acoustics Solutions flat screen from Argos is doing a great job.
