Car Insurance
The Comments |
Hi - we have just bought a car in Spain. We would like our friends to be able to use it when they are at our house. Can anyone tell me if we can take out extra insurance to cover them for a specified period. We used to take out carhire excess insurance so I suppose it would be something similar to that.
Thanks

Mike...
I'm pretty sure that if the car is insured with a Spanish company, no additional insurance is necessary. The level of cover is the same no matter who is driving it.
What is required however is a note from you as the owner of the vehicle that the driver of the vehicle has your permission to drive it. Being Spain, it would be best if the note was in Spanish.
The insurance certificate should be kept in the vehicle along with the registration documents and the ITV history if applicable.

Perhaps a check with the insurance company about any restrictions on other drivers, such as age. Our insurance with Abbeygate covers any other driver 30 - 70 years old with full EU license.

Thanks for the replies - what we are concerned about is what happens if our friends are involved in an accident.....do our premiums jump through the roof?

The insurance company will have insured the car against claims for damage and will have to pay out whoever is driving (but, as advised, do check with them on age restrictions before you agree to let anyone drive it. Certainly young drivers won't be included.). If you claim for anything when your friends are driving it will be treated exactly the same as if you were driving. Goodbye no claims discount!
