Tongue in cheek...
CHILL?
In these temps? Daytime temps where we are rarely less than 95F dropping only to 85F around 4am... At 6pm today the temp on our roof was 105F. At the moment, 2am its 86F.
Aircon working overtime, strongly suspect our leccy bill this month will be the same as for January when we need the heating 24/7.
Seriously though, to anyone considering driving down, to quote Nike... Just Do It!
Scare yourself silly driving over the suspension river bridge at Bordeaux in France especially if the wind is blowing and you are driving a Transit or Luton type van.... and if your SatNav routes you via Central Madrid and the M30 ignore it, come off the main southbound E5 early and join the M50, routing between the Airport at Barajas and the Airforce base at Torrejon. Pick up the Southbound E5 again at junction 17 I think it is...
See viamichelin.com for routings to the CDS, Granada, or CB.
Above all enjoy the trip.
You will need a dayglo flak jacket for each person in the car and a spare lighting pack for your vehicle (Halfords). It used to be that you needed to carry the tools necessary to change the bulbs but nowadays with most cars its a garage job anyway so this requirement is no longer enforced. Two warning triangles are also required for Spain.
Never, ever argue with the Gendarmerie or the Guardia Civil... they are scary enough, but they also have guns! They are also always right!
Be prepared for quite high speeding fines in both France and Spain. 10% over the limit they probably wont bother you with but anything over that will almost certainly cost you 300 Euros. As a tourist the fine must be paid on the spot (cash or credit / debit card) which will give you a 50% reduction in Spain. Worth noting also is that all marked GC cars have PGC in their registration plate. Unmarked cars well, as with the UK you just have to take your chance.
One last thing, if you are stopped by the police, and invited to 'step out of the car', put on your flak jacket before leaving the vehicle... its worth another fine if you don't...

Original document or copies.
Everyone must make their choice, however, a 70 friend of mine was stopped on Costa Del Sol and asked for her car papers (spanish Reg). . She had not committed any traffic offence. When she produced photocopies copies she was given an on the spot fine, of I believe about 75 euros.
Only the original documents, or copies authorised by the authority which issued them, are legal. So Car documents the DVLA; Passports, passport office or a British Consulate, etc.
So take your pick of the advice offered here, but if you choose to carry photocopies, please don't complain if you get fined or your car get confiscated until you have produced the legal documents.

HI JOHN
I WAS ONLY REFERING TO THE CAR DOCS AND I DEFY ANYONE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORIGINALS AND GOOD COLOUR COPIES
BUT THEN ALL MUST DECIDE WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM

Copies are copies.
Believe me, the authorities are not stupid.
If no one could really tell the difference why would anyone carry any original documents.
When we had Residencia Cards, I, like many others, carried a plasticized copy, a very good copy but when a person produced one at the police station we all knew it was a copy, even when people tried to argue it was the original.
So don't think that a copy can be passed off as an original, but if you like to take other advice, then carry copies, your choice.
Can you imagine arriving at say Passport control in any countriy and expecting for one minute that the control will accept a copy no matter how good !!!!!
PS excuse me I am just off to copy a couple of 50 euros notes, it will save me going to an ATM. I don't think so !
Sorry, I am being silly too

I know Janie, sorry, I know you said car docs, but I got carried away with the idea that anyone in authority would be fooled into thinking that any sort of copy of anything was an original.

What is so difficult?
Keep the COPIES at home - in case of theft/loss of the originals. Keep the ORIGINALS with the vehicle.
Easy!

Many thanks to everyone who offered advice, I has been very much appreciated, and it's good to know these tips.
Can I ask those people who have driven down to the CDS from the ferry at Calais which routes they found the best. We intend to spend 2 days in France and one in Spain travelling down, any suggestions would be greatly received, either the quickest or scenic routes.
Many thanks.

There are many routes, some scenic, some fast, some leisurely - BUT when driving through France, PLEASE make a slight detour to a Military Cemetery and pay your respects to those who Gave Their All.
Have a safe and enjoyable drive.

4 adults - and not a dry eye between us..!!
It was their ages that got to us - 18, 19 even 17 year olds.
If anyone reading this thread have never been to pay their respects, then do it the next opportunity you get.
The feeling of peace and tranquility you will experience when you enter the Cemetery, will remain with you forever.
We Will Remember Them.

When living in north Africa we would go every Rememberance Day to the war grave cemetery. The most poignant inscrition I saw there was "Into the mosaic of life I place this precious piece, my son" Even now I can't remember this without becoming very tearful. We have also visited several in France and would agree it is well worth taking the time to visit.

The original village 45°55′44″N 001°02′24″E was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built after the war on a nearby site and the original has been maintained as a memorial.

This is 'war memoral' with a difference. I visited it about 30 years ago and the mempry is still vivid.
Its more or less on the route driving from French ferry ports to Spain
