Hi,
I transferred most of my stuff from my old stack PC to my new laptop; fine. But infrequently I get ‘out of space at line 15’ or whatever. ‘Out of memory.’ It seems to be WORD space problem; browsing online is more or less unaffected; just slow.
It seems to recover on its own but clearly something needs to be done. Can I buy more memory and what is the likely cost? Should I in the meantime buy time by shoving as much stuff as possible on to memory stick? – Mike

Hi Mike,
When does the error message appear? Are you running a specific program? You seem to imply that the message is displayed when you are running Microsoft Word. Is that correct? You should be able to buy more memory if there is a spare slot in your laptop. Is the laptop a "new" laptop or just new to you. Ie, second-hand or refurbished? Do you have anti-virus software running on your laptop. Slow running could be a symptom of a virus infection.

Hi Pat ... thanks! Invariably when I am using Microsoft word just writing in one file or another. I am 'landing' in Spain early next month so should be able to buy some additional memory there. It is a new problem for me.
The laptop is a Toshiba; Microsoft Word is (excuse me) the dog's bollocks. I was told by a PC expert, hang on to it as it will cost me if I lose it.
Although it is four years old it hasn't been much used and 12 months ago was completely given the works. I have spybot and AVG. as it so happens, each time I run spybot I get about 12 blasted intruders. :o)

Does your laptop have the latest service pack? Service Pack 3. I am assuming that the operating system is Windows XP. If so. have you applied all the Windows updates that are available? There are a lot...
4 years old is quite old these days for a laptop but should be ok for Word unless your documents have many pages then you might run into some issues.
Re, your memory stick. I would recommend saving your documents there anyway as a backup in case something happens to your laptop. It can be replaced but maybe the same cannot be said for all your documents.
How severe does Spybot classify the "inrtuders"?

Spybot: As potential threats I think; I was told that they are in there to trace my browsing habits; hardly MOSSAD stuff; commercial I suppose. I do seem to get more of them these days. Not sure about a Service Pack. Perhaps so; I am one of the majority who just puts it in for a service occasionally, or when things go wrong. I will lok for updates but should I mess about: My PC specialist would / should have done that when giving it the works two months ago. Yes, I have a lot already on memory sticks I back up frequently.

Hi Mike,
To find out which service pack you have:
Click your mouse over the [Start] button
Right-Click My Computer and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
On the "General" Tab under System: It should tell you which service pack has been installed, and it should say "Service Pack 3"
It will also tell you how much RAM (Random Access Memory) there is in your laptop. I would want at least 2GB of RAM.
Hope that helps.
Pat.

Hi Pat ... I tried that and it seems there is the answer: It was full; no free space. Wasn't sure how you access 'general' as ther was nothing in there to say which system was in there. - Cheers, Mike

You should be able to see something like this by selecting "View system information" from the "System tasks" menu on the left of "My Computer". But as you say if there is no free space you will either need to delete some files from your laptop or failing that, buy a bigger hard-disk drive.

Cheers, it is System Pack 3 update daily. Looks like I do need that bigger hard disc drive or dump excess bagage! Cheers, Pat. You have been a great help!

You can always remove duplicate documents from your computer.
Or you can use a zip program like winzip to compress your files to many times smaller than they are.
Ideal for stuff you dont need regularly but really want to keep.
