Hi in _the _sun,
Don´t think you should label all campo Andalucians as thick because they are not. I live in a village 20 km north of Granada and it is definately classed as the campo, olives, almonds and cherries but most people who live here, and we are the only extrajeros, are very articulate even though a lot of the older people have never been to school they all speak either French or German as well as Spanish due to moving where the work was in the times when Franco starved Andalucia of funds because they opposed him. They are also the most friendly people one could wish to meet and are always ready to share anything that they have grown or made and have a surplace of so we could not wish for better neighbours and friends.

i never said they was thick ,we was talking about an english comedy that was translated for the spanish to watch. i lived in the campo for the first 5 yrs i was moved to spain and totally agree on them being more friendly , but the spanish frommadrid or barcelona class all andalucians as country farmers and say they can not talk correct spanish as they are lazy ,

I think you'll find that it's the Murcianos who are considered thick and ugly. There was a guy from where i stay more or less who used to appear in all the Spanish films as a thick ugly person.

Someone once told me that people always make jokes about the people to the west of them - so the Spanish laugh about the Portugese - the English laugh about the Irish, the Russians laugh about the Poles (is Poland West of Russia - can't quite visualise) - I thought that was pretty funny. Everyone in America laughs at the West Coast thinking it is lah lah land so maybe something in it???

And just to confirm what I said below (about the west), I have just been told that the butt of Spanish jokes is the people of Lepe in Huelva. 'Chistes de Leperos" is the equiv of our Irish jokes in England. Interesting!!!

- ¿Por qué has tardado tanto?

Very good, but a bit like ' You've got a flat tyre' , 'yes, but it's only flat at the bottom'.
Having a great thunder storm here right now. So much for 'sun, sand and sangria'. My veggies are eternally grateful.

Moving overseas is not for everyone but having moved to the middle east in the early 1990's and then Spain in 2007 I can thoroughly recommend it. It is all about lifestyle and waking with sunshine almost every day makes it worth it for me. Don't get me wrong I don't sunbathe constantly but it just affects your whole mood.
There is work here but you must look for it or create it.
There are opportunities and experiences awaiting you. Probably a better health service than the UK too.
There are people still investing in homes here in Spain (I know as I own a real estate company) and there are bargains to be had.
If you are not sure try renting first, best to do it in September when there is more choice of long term rental properties available.
Good luck.

i wanted to move to spain in 2007,the in-laws had a flat in calpe and we had holidays there for the last 10years and love the sorrounding area (not so much calpe now) since then we have rented villa's every year in and around moraira as that is where we wanted to live.We are in our mid 40's we have no mortgage and also own a flat we rent out.I am a ceramic tiler and thought it would be easy enough to find work.We started our search but my brother in law who works at dolliette in the uk told us things were not all rosy in the financial world and we should hold off awhile, whilst i feel his judgement was spot on i also wonder if my life would have been better in the sunshine as i have arthritus in my hands and shoulders.work would be hard to come by now and the property would be worth less so i think we had a lucky financial escape but at the loss of happiness as i am sure my kids would have enjoyed the lifestyle instead of being trapped in doors by the weather.
