After being provided with some outrageously-high package holiday prices at travel agents today for the Malaga area, we can see it will be cheaper to book flights and find our own accommodation! For example, Thompson quoted us no less than £16,000 self catering for the two of us for three weeks in Benalmadena!  Ryan air flights are reasonable compared to some others from East Midlands Airport but are we less open to fraud if we hire a car through Ryan Air rather than using one of the firms found at Malaga Airport?  We have read about so many scams concerning Hire firms at the airport, we are reluctant to use any of them.

We would rather stay in a village inland from the coast than in an apartment along the coastline so it looks as though we'll need to hire a car.  Other than that....it's a taxi/bus from the Airport to where we want to go.  Thinking about Colmenar....for three weeks from the beginning of October.

We have had a few problems with CAR HIRE mainly before we switched to www.carmalaga.com I have no interest in promoting them only that they look after our guests and we use them TOO they are not actually in the AIRPORT.

I have tried them all PRETTY much OVER THE YEARS downstairs at the airport and they do RIP you off.

You may also find that three weeks in an INLAND spanish village may get a BIT BORING the coast is VASTLY different in OCTOBER in comparison to the MAD SUMMER MONTHS a really nice time to VISIT.

Hope you have a WONDERFUL time.

Regards Rod

Maddie,
There is an excellent train service, 3 trains an hour in each direction, which runs between Malaga city, stops at the airport, and continues to Fuengirola..  To travel the whole line is just a few euros.

If you then stay somewhere along that stretch you will also find excellent bus services again at very reasonable rates.

If you decide to stay near a station, avoiding if you wish the main stops, you will find very reasonably priced accommodation. Say around 600 euros a month, out of the high summer season.

And if you wish to explore the hinterland then local car hire companies probably offer much better value than those based at the airport.

Sorry, off topic, but was that really £16,000 or did you add an extra 0? Could get a few months all inclusive in Barbados for less than that!!

Mark

I use Centauro and have found them very good over the last 8 years. Based just off the airport but with a shuttle bus. There are very few places to hire a car other than at or near the airport. Having stayed regularly further north towards Cordoba, we never found car hire locally at all, let alone cheaper. About 115 euros a week, l think. New cars, under 1000 km on the clock usually.

Colmenar has 8 buses a day to Malaga should the bright lights be a draw. But with a car there is MASSES to explore (and on foot, too!).

Three weeks in a Spanish village a bit boring???? I don't think so! But then l'd not particularly drawn to "full English breakfasts", lrish theme bars, or British karaoke bars. It's true those aren't found in Colmenar or other inland villages. Oh l remember now, that's why l moved there.

Oooops! You're right Markfish....it should have read £1600....well spotted.  Thanks!  We're looking on lowcostholidays.com at the moment and finding much more realistic prices.  Good to know there are buses to take us exploring to some locations, although a car can take us to those places that the buses can't (or won't) reach....

Hi.  We've used loads of car hire companies over the years as well and malagacar.com is the best (not to be confused with Rod's 'carmalaga' below - I initially thought we were talking about the same company - I'm not aware of the one he's mentioned).  They don't do all this examining of the car afterwards to try and catch you out on something and have a good fuel policy - you can get half a tank to empty, which is quite good for Malaga.  It's a proper little Spanish firm as far as I can tell, and they have good prices.  The main thing is you don't have to get worried about being stung.  We don't even bother now with all the comparing prices because they do a good price and you don't pay if you cancel which is another bonus.   If you travel a lot it is also a good idea to get a car hire excess policy which also puts the mind at rest and you can get an annual one for about £40.  All the best.

Shameless plug: if you want a truly authentic Spanish experience, you could do worse than stay in our casa which is about 1 1/2 hours from Malaga airport and we currently have availability for the first three weeks of October.  Take a look on this link: http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/p86636

Anyway, buen viaje!
