Hi all,
We're currently having a new septic tank fitted in our property in Spain. We looked at a couple of types and elected to go for one that cleans the toilet, shower, sink etc water (in fact all mains water that goes down the varous drains once used), and stores it in a seperate tank which then sends it to various taps in the garden to be used to irrigate the plants.
We chose this over the more traditional models as it allows us to pave over the tanks if we wish and eliminates the need to the waste water to be pumped into the ground (albeit channelled to avoid flooding).
Does anyone else actually have first hand experience of one of these systems and can you let us know your tohughts?
We're told that the water cannot be drunk (although I know of more industrial systems where the water is actually pure enough and safe enough to drink), not can it be used to wash the car for some reason, but we use lots of water washing the various terraces and watering the plants that don't get water from the mountain irrigation system that feeds our orchard etc.
These things aren't cheap, but I reackon in about 10 years of so they pay for themselves in water savings.
This coupled with the solar we use for hot water I think now qualifies us as eco warriors!!
Regards, Carl
