Are the recessionary woes of many small businesses due rather to poor staff management, lethargy or lack of experience?
There are of course exceptions to the rule. A good example is the Spanish-owned Asturias Restaurant near Torrevieja. This restaurant, and a few others like it, are busy through the day and packed most nights. The friendly service is superb, prices reasonable and their entertainment has international appeal. Much the same can be said for a nearby business, whose prices are quite high.
But, many eateries with similar potential and appeal are empty-ish. We went to the nearby Orihuela Costa Resort. It is a far more fabulous setting but what a couldn’t care less staff. In a word, inattentive.
Many countries in the EU faced are faced with similar problems but their economies are doing much better and unemployment more manageable. If there was a recession then surely the effects would be more even.
I tend to think that the recession, for many businesses, is just an excuse for ineptitude; they would struggle even in a vibrant economy. There are quite a few that wouldn’t last five minutes where there is real competition.
