driving a moped / scooter

Hi, another question for all you intelligent, experienced and helpful people out there.

I'm off to Spain On Saturday and looking to buy a scooter / moped while I'm there. Likely I'll buy a 50 cc scooter, but I just wanted to know if i can drive up to a 125 cc bike on my standard UK licence? I'm over 21 (sadly) and have been driving for 20 odd years. I don't have any special licence, just a clean standard UK licence.

I ask because i understand the law may have changed in the second half of this year in Spain and I may only be able to drive up to a 50 CC limit - without having to take any tests / addtional licence???

If anyone is aware of the law as it stands now I'd really appreciate it.

It appears that the law here changed in January this year and as far as can be established, if your licence has category A1 or a full bike allowance (A), then you can ride bikes up to 125cc. It appears that you can ride a bike up to 125cc on your car licence if you have had that licence for 3 years.

Warning: As usual legal information in Spain is vague at best, so I would email or call the British Embassy in Madrid with your question – email would be best then you can get a written response that can be translated into Spanish and notarised by an abogado (lawyer) or Gestor (Licenced Business Manager), just in case Guardia trafico need proof at any road stop.
