Has any of the members of this forum opinions  Good or Bad on the services given by their localG.P Surgery.

We  live in  Guardamar del Segura and  our  HealthCentre  is as bad as it gets,  Very hostile  and  unhelpful  refusing  to  allow  us as we struggle to speak Spanish to the best of our  ability, In contrast our friends who live  in nearby Montesinos, have wonderful Doctors and staff  and the level of care is very good. They are given regular checks for  Blood Pressure ,choelestrol and general health. We at Guardamar have nothing of that      level of care, ihave never had  a check for prostrate etc. in years

Speaking Spanish makes a real difference in almost every situation.  (I remember when I livied in UK people used to complain about those going to live there and not bothering to learn English)

Be aware the medical centres, just like everywhere else, must have ‘Complaints Forms'. So if not satisfied ask for them and COMPLETE them.

This might help. It an official pubication:

Right obligations of citizens in the public health services of Andalusia.

In accordance with Andalusian Health Act 2/1998, published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Andalusia number 74, of 4th July.

Your Rights as a user of the healthcare system

To be offered the available healthcare, benefits and services necessary to care for your health.

For you, your relatives or companions to receive information in comprehensible language on everything related to your process, including diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, expected stay in hospital and alternative treatment.

To receive clear and comprehensible information on treatment, surgical procedures and tests that involve risks, before your written consent is obtained.

To know about and give prior written authorization to procedures used in a teaching or research project which under no circumstances may entail an additional risk for your health.

To choose from the options submitted by your doctor, and to refuse any health intervention, except in the cases established by law (risk for public health, incapacity and urgent intervention in cases of risk of irreversible injury or danger to life).

To be accompanied by a relative or person you trust at all times during the healthcare process, provided that clinical circumstances so permit.

To have all the information concerning your care in any health centre kept confidential, and to have access to the personal data obtained during your care.

To have a written record, or record on technical support, of your process kept in your medical record. The information, which must be in one record for each health institution, will include your state of health and evolution, as well as the tests and treatment you receive.

To have access to your medical records, using the established procedures.

To receive a report on discharge from hospital, on completion of a specialist consultation, and on discharge from emergency.

To be issued a certificate attesting to the state of your health.

To be assigned a doctor and a primary healthcare centre to treat you, although you may choose another doctor and centre.

To choose your general practitioner and paediatrician from among those practising in your town or city, and also from among the other doctors in the Health District corresponding to your address.

To choose a specialist for consultations, when in the opinion of your GP or paediatrician, you need to be treated by such a specialist, and to receive care from the same specialist during your process.

To choose a hospital within the Public Healthcare System of Andalusia, if you are waiting for an operation.

To have a second medical opinion on your process, in the terms established.

To know the name and function of the professionals who treat you.

I am very satisfied with the care I receive at the health centre I use We are subjected to regular health checks blood tests ecg's etc and same day appointments are available Far better than I would have got in the UK However although some of the doctors speak some English I have found them very loathe to use it It is so easy to communicate the wrong information unless you are very comfortable in another language particularly when someone's health is concerned

as the language may be an issue suggest you take a transaltor with you

make a diary and record of every incident of rudeness etc. no matter how small or trivial

request the complaints book EVERY time and fill it in

find another surgery and explain to them why you wish to join

Not sure if  the info johnzx is 100% applicable in Valencia as it is for Andalucia it may be similar  but I would not refer to it or use it - suggest you find the Valencian equivalent health act

Our health centre just up the road from you is brilliant. Regular check ups, same or next day appointments. The doctors are very reluctant to speak English, though. I think they are worried that they will make an error. Interpreters are available and signs up saying where to contact them. I am lucky in that my hubby speaks Spanish very well and attends with me as I struggle (I can understand a lot but find it difficult to reply). Now that we have been using the centre for some years, the doctor does explain things to me in English albeit after having explained it all in Spanish to hubby first.

You say you haven't had a prostate exam. All residents in the Valencia region were sent letters asking them if they wanted this check, and others, done. All you had to do was return the letter and they would send you a kit which you then provided a sample and took to your GP centre. We have had two such invitations in the last 3 years. I also get called for an annual check up and full blood tests.

No complaints at all about the healthcare. I have been referred to consultants twice and both appointments have been given with days. First one at Torrevieja with hubby interpreting and second one at the health clinic in Guardamar where the young doctor spoke perfect English.

The complaints procedure (and thank you procedure) forms are on the counter at reception. We have filled in the thank you ones a couple of times.

I think the rules re health services in Spain are pretty much the same.

However, if one wanted to be 100% certain,  I am sure one could ask for  the formal info re Murcia at any health centre / hospital etc.  in that Region.

johnzx I am prety sure you are correct and it will be very similar across Spain but Guardamar del Segura is not in Murcia or Andalucia it is in Valencia (Alicante)

Thanks to you who have replied ,one point that JOHNZX   regards patients rights, The right to change your Health Centre.

Can anyone define Health Area. Is for example Guardamar, Torrevieja, Montesinos all in the same area, being in the Valenciana de Salut. In the Uk you have no restrictions,Live in Brighton and have a GP in Liverpool in theory.I dont know if that is an E.U. Rule  or just relevant  to the UK.

I don't think you can register with a GP in Brighton if you lived in Liverpool - you can choose a hospital / specialist in Brighton if you live in Liverpool as long as your local GP refers you which they can do. Of course you can visit any GP in UK if you are travelling on business or hoilday etc. and you would register as a temp or visitor and all records would be sent to your local GP. As well as costs transferred bewteen NHS trusts

It is basically the same across Spain as in the UK, your SIP card is issued by the region you live in which for you is Valencia, which in UK terms is your local NHS trust. As for registering with a GP I think it is up to your local medical centre and what local areas they cover  - again as in the UK.

A valid SIP card will cover you anywhere in Spain for treatment.

I think the healthcard covers you anywhere in the Alicante region (for registering). We come under Rojales but the lady who deals with the cards works for Torrevieja health but gets the cards from the social security department at Orihuela. Confused? You will be on the next episode of........

The EU does not deal with health matters at that low a level except that all EU citizens will be treated in the same way as nationals. And you certainly couldn't register anywhere in UK.  GPs have a catchment area for registrations. Part of their contract states they will do a home visit if necessary so it would be a bit awkard for them to drive that distance if requested. You can, as Tadd says, see a GP outside your area but only as a temporary resident and a GMS2 form is sent to your home GP to show what treatment you have had. If the NHS ever gets its IT system working it will all be accessed on PC.

Go to whoever issued you your SIP card and tell them you want to change practice. I'm sure Quesada or Guardamar itself would be in your area. Maybe even Montesinos but you may come up against interpreter problems at any of them.
