Road from Bilbao to Alicante

Can anyone tell us what the roads are like from Bilbao to Alicante, we are two OAPs and dog (what a picture that conjurs up), we are not happy with high mountain passes and roads hanging off the side of cliffs, so we thought we would ask before booking the ferry, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Virtually motorway all the way. You're not going to get away with going through the mountains but they are wide, good barriers and, apart from a couple of places, almost traffic free.

Toll from Bilbao to Burgos about €28. Then toll free all the way except for a couple of euro for the Madrid ring road (wouldn't advise going through Madrid centre).

Madrid to Albacete and Albacete to Alicante, all motorway. About 8 1/2 to 9 hours with a couple of stops for loo, coffee and petrol. 

Thank you so much for that it has put our minds at rest and we feel we can take that on, cannot wait to get away from rainy britain.

We are also two OAP's and have done the drive well over a dozen times. As Mariedav has pointed out it's very easy and the motorways are virtually empty. If the boat is a late one we often stayed overnight around Burgos and make the journey fresh next morning but that's just us, it's not really necessary. The scenery in the north of Spain is lovely but the weather can be much like the UK (so we were told by a local). We enjoy the drive so hope that you will. The roads are not really anything to be concerned about.

Thanks GB45 for your post I think we will do the same and stay overnight, we were worried about the road network as although we live around hills (Malvern Worcestershire) it is not like the mountain roads with no barriers, but we feel much more confident reading these two kind replies, we shall take our time and enjoy the Spanish countryside.
