I take it you are looking at buying this type of appliance due to not having regular plumbing .like the absence of a soil pipe or not having a sceptic tank .

Yes that's right. It's a nave I built in the campo few years ago. Have water electricity and Spend a lot of time there but Don't want to go the expense and general rigmarole of getting permissions etc. for regular toilet. Loads of info on Internet. But like I said the more I read the more confused I get. Just wondered if anyone has any experience of fitting one. They're not cheap and the reviews on line are so diverse.

I have no experience of installing a composting toilet but have come across them several times and I have been unimpressed - they seemed to be smelly. Perhaps it's just the absence of running water that puts me off. These were at an ecological building training centre in Dorset (where they teach straw bale building, cobbing, etc) so one would have thought they would have been of a high standard.
I know a bit about septic tanks. A small one for the use you describe oughtn't to be very expensive to install - two or three thousand euros, which would buy you a septic tank, excavation, pipes and toilet.
