I agree there is no need for any apology and I take it as politeness. Just as I would be polite in the reverse situation.
In my experience language teachers are interested in these grammatical points, and even use them as talking points in their classes.
The last time I mentiond this point in my Spanish Class I also pointed out the rule that said the e at the end of a word hardened the vowel in the middle. I was embarrassed by being thanked for this infomation several times. The teacher had never had it explained before.
But perhaps Tadd, you see no point in discussing grammer with your Spanish teacher.
