Well, we're here and the dogs love it but the ferry journey is not one I would put the pups through again. I know it is the only way the ferry company can transport the dogs, to them they are cargo but it broke my heart to see where my beloved pups were going to spend 19 hours. In future, if I need to take them home, I will fly them home - just because the time element is so much shorter. As you will know I have been keeping a record of our move and the pups on my blogs and have loved posting photos, but I wouldn't take a photo of the pups in the kennel as I didn't want a reminder.

Don't get me wrong, the area was clean and as practical as it could be with the ability to walk the dogs on the deck but the area they are kept is stark. There are metal kennels (cages) small ones on top of larger ones which you need to take any bedding, toys, food, treats etc. Water is available and there are food/water dishes attached to the cage door but it just looks as if they are in prison. A number of the dogs were unhappy, and there was so much noise from them all barking that my 2 just looked so small and unhappy. I had paid for 2 small kennels but one was big enough for them both so we put them together for the trip and this helped. They were so scared to start with that they wouldn't even go for a walk. At least we were able to spend asmuch time with them as we wanted but it wasn't the nicest place to spend sitting with them.

There was all sorts of chaos through the journey, a large retriever managed to break the door off his cage, a lurcher got stuck halfway through the cage bars and when we managed to free him we moved him to a smaller kennel and 2 chihuaha's, whose owner had booked them into a large cage obviously thinking they were being good to the dogs by giving them more room, were found running freely around the place as they could walk through the cage bars.

Some dogs did settle but they tended to be the much older dogs and these dogs seemed to be veterans of the journey, but it 's not something I want to repeat. Neil & I had a lovely cabin and we would have been so much happier to have had the dogs with us in the cabin. Needless to say we were up early in the morning to go and get them out of the cage and sit with them until we were ready to leave the ferry.

Fortunately, both dogs forgave us and within an hour of leaving the ferry port were back to their normal selves. They travelled very well through Spain and have settled at the villa fabulously, they love being outside in the warmth.

Oh, I know how you feel about the journey! Why not use the tunnel next time? They are with you in the car and the only rule is that they are not in the front of the car.Less trauma all round! We have only one King Charles now and I would not travel any other way. I know it is easier with older dogs as they sleep more. I can just picture your two little ones enjoying the sun and then finding their own shady places!

Hi Lifeline

Originally it was our intention to go through the tunnel and drive through France and Spain but following some yobs nicking and torching our car we ended up driving down in an old jalopy and we didn't think it would manage the mileage through France as well as Spain, so opted to get the ferry to Santander. That way, at least if we broke down, we could hire a car in Spain to complete the journey.

However, all that is history and today our puppies are having so much fun playing around the villa and sunbathing.

Today the furniture arrived so they have been using the sunbeds to sleep on, it's been cloudy today so no problem with them getting sunburnt, but yes, they have discovered a few shady places around the villa.

It's great being here.

Hi Jacqui, think you missed seeing my post.

Being cloudy doesn't protect anyone including dogs from sunburn. One year I got the worst sunburn in Minorca.  We walked to Ciudadela town from our hotel a couple of miles away &, just after we'd started out ,the clouds covered the sun & it felt really chilly. I hadn't a jacket & we were walking for ages. Next day I was so sore. Unbelievable it was. I'd heard you could burn without sun but never realised to what extent.

Oops sorry More, I don't think I scrolled down enough.  I'm glad your enjoying my blogs and I'm really pleased to have got an internet connection sorted at the villa via Vodaphone, not broadband, not perfect but hey, I'm back on line - yippee.

It looks like I'll need to get sun hats and suncream for the dogs then! They are outside all the time, they just love it here. It's a good job it's warm enough to leave the door open otherwise I would be constantly up and down to le them out. They are very sensible and have found that if they lie down by the gate there is a good draft comes underneath. I have never known them drink so much water and have to keep checking their dishes. They have discovered woodlice and beetles here that they've never seen before which is comical but the best has to be the automatic water system they have installed to water the plants here. When it comes on the dogs can hear the noise around the base of the plants, but can't see anything so we found them barking at a tree last night with a very quizzical look on their faces.

Hubby has gone to play golf so I've a got a few hours to myself this morning.

Someone sent me this today and I immediately thought of Jacqui  - hope you and the pups (not such pups now though, I imagine!) are enjoying San Juan.  Pm me if you come down our way.  Sorry couldn't shrink this!

Absolutely brilliant photo - and very similar looking to Brinkley, hopefully they will never have to experience snow again - they are definitely like their mum and prefer the warm sunshine.

The boys are all grown up now and such wonderful dogs, have a look at Brinkley's blog for all the latest including their Christmas photo with me.

Just had a look at the map, Bedar isn't too far away so maybe in the New Year after Christmas has settled down we'll take a drive over to say Hi.

Thanks again for the photo

Jacqui
