Hi there,
Can anyone help me? We are planning on moving to Valencia this summer and need some information on N.I.E. numbers. We have previously worked in Spain 9 years ago, so that means I should have an N.I.E. number but I have no official document, is there a way to find out if this N.I.E number is still valid or should I apply for a new one? My other question is, we are not planning on buying a property yet, just renting at first until we find work, which documentation do I need when applying for my N.I.E ?

The other thing...is make sure you keep it in a plastic folder as every time I have needed to present it I have been asked for the original.....a copy will never do!!

Hi again, another question!
After applying for my NIE in Gandia in May they told me to come back in 10 days to pick up my number, that wasn't possible for me as I was flying back before the 10 days. The guy also told me that I had filled in the wrong form and that I should apply for residencia, he scribbled something on the form and that was it. Now my plans have changed and we are now wanting to move to Ibiza instead of Valencia, do I have to go to pick up my NIE number / residencia in Gandia or can I pick it up in Ibiza? What do I have to take with me when picking up my NIE number? Does it matter which address you gave at the time you applied?
Any help would be most welcome. This message was last edited by sunshinegirl on 6/24/2008.

In general you do have to pick up the NIE certificate from the office where you requested the NIE and some offices will only hold this certificate for 3-6 months from the time of issue. You will need to take your stamped copy of your NIE application and your passport to retrieve it. The website for all the forms is at the MIE or interior Ministry website http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/extranjeria/modelos_extranje/

Ahh - LOVE that paperwork.
The NIE is a vital thing to have. It's your tax number and your ID number.

Certainly, if you purchase a property (as you said in another post you may do though you'd be staying with your parents initially), you each need a NIE (as indeed we did in order to purchase). Unsure about if you don't.

Depending on how old your children, they might need them for school too. We are in Alicante (but just for holidays) but my neighbours had to get them about four weeks ago for high school for their children, and, but I may have misunderstood the Spanish, a younger child had one to go on a school trip to Madrid.
I think that they change the rules from office to office. I was refused one in Elche, as they said that the purchase contract for my apartment was invalid, so I went to Elda the following day and got one, presenting exactly the same paperwork. BUT, there was a sign on the wall saying that the law had changed in May 2009 and that to get residencia you needed to take your padron. Maybe worth checking with Maria the lawyer.
Hope that helps.

I'm a little confused on the NIE form and the guide that was posted.
For location the guide says if you do not have an address in Spain to leave blank.
Now..
After translating the NIE form it says "Domicilio en Espana, en el pais de origen o de resiencia legal"
which roughly translated means: "Address in Spain, the country of origin or legal residence"
Surely this means if you don't have an address in Spain then put where your legal residence is?

Hi
I put as my address, the address of the apartment that I am buying, (at the time it wasn't even completed) and for the other bit I put Pentre for place of birth and UK as country of residence. I sked a Spanish neighbour in the UK how to complete it. He explained that as I was putting the reason for wanting an NIE was so that I could purchase a property, they would want to match the address on my contract of purchase for the apartment (the reason I needed an NIE) with an address on the application form, and that was exactly what they did, and I had to make a copy of the purchase contract for them too.
What are putting as your reason for wanting to get an NIE, this should point to what address you put.
Hope this helps. If not please PM me and I will look out the form as I kept a copy and I can scan it and send it to you. Having only done this a few weeks ago, I understand how frustrating it can be.

Hello
I wonder if anyone can help?
A client of ours got his NIE but has now lost it!!! Does he need to reapply for a new one or is there a way of going to the Police Station he got the original and asking for another copy? He has no note of the NIE number he had!!
Any advice would be great- thank you!

Thanks Alyson but I'm asking for someone who does not have a property in Spain and will be renting so they will have no address.
But my translation says Address in Spain or address where you are resident but the guides say only put a Spanish address in if you have one if not leave it blank.

I know!!! I have a big file in which I keep the whole families documents. All in sections, mine,my husbands,my 2 children and then one with family stuff/bank details etc. I take it to every 'official' place I have to go and I have 2 copies of every document. I just open the file and say 'here, take what you need!'
Some might call me anal, I say, i've lived in Spain long enough to know!!
