i recently appointed an estate agent to rent out my apartment for a long term contract, they want a copy of my title deed. Is that a compulsary thing in spain?
Thanks for all your help.

Where in Spain? If your property is in Andalucia, decreto 218/2005 lays down the law on what info real estate agents must hold on ALL properties they list, whether for sale or rent.
Even setting that aside, it's seems perfectly reasonable for an agent to request this. Otherwise, how can he know that the property is yours to rent out?

Nice place!
If you Google for decreto 218, you'll find loads about it, mostly aimed at estate agents as they panic to conform to the "new" rules (they're not so new, it's just that they are only now being enforced!)
It's fairly sensible stuff, intended to bring a bit of regulation and professionalism to the industry, unlike the HIPS in the UK which appears to be just another stealth tax to me.
