Just found a great little joint in Villajoyosa, the Bar Restaurante Diego, basic but clean, noisy and full of Spaniards devouring the Menu del Dia.
This last week cost 9 Euro for three courses with bread and a drink. Large portions of good traditional Spanish food, no printed menu, only the waiter's advice as to what was still left, and no English spoken. Service was fast and friendly despite the place being packed.
Don't miss this little gem of an eatery, the location is just across the road from the Valor chocolate shop on Avda Pais Valencia.
If you want England in the sun, just take the escalators down through the Parque Cansal, which is to the right of Valor, and you reach the promenade where you find on your immediate left, another restaurant, name not recorded, which was full of English speaking punters enjoying their Menu del Dia, similarly priced to Diego's. Great view of the bay from here.
BTW, the Valor shop was a disgrace with indifferent service and no churros available, what a downer!
Villajoyosa is a great little place well worth a visit. We'll be back ! Take the little train from Alicante city, Plaza Puerto de Mar, get off at Creueta stop and walk downhill toward beach. You can get back on the train to ravel another 10km to Benidorm if you wish.
