Driving to Guardamar from the South Coast, quickest and cheapest route?
The Comments |
Hi there, does anyone happen to have driven from the South coast to south east Spain enough times to know the quickest and cheapest route? ie, Dover to Calais then through France, or Portsmouth to Bilbao, San Sebastian, Santander. As I am thinking of staying a month next time I might save money on the car rental if I drive down. What do you think? Linda

Hi Linda
Done journey both ways mentioned, cost wise, for a month, not a lot in it,France way is a long old haul, some nice stopovers.Bilbao way ,to drive is dead easy and fast roads,540 miles, ferry a bit boring, accomodation bit basic.
Good luck

Linda,
We drive to CDS so slightly further but echo what carsafe says. When you weigh up car hire against the cost of motoring not a lot in it unless you intend to stock up with goodies on your way back. Plus you have to factor in the time it takes . You can do France in a day with fast driving and few stops using the motorway! We usually aim to do Calais - Bordeaux first day.
Personally we prefer going through France to the awful Bilbao ferry. It is a boring, glorified, overpriced car ferry. Only done it once and never again. Have been told the Plymouth-Santander ferry is better but not worth the long drive from South East England.
