Good to see the old Ryanair slating threads raising their heads again.
Of course, you could be lucky and get this one on your next trip:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2323138.ece
Once you've paid your extras for credit/debit card charges, the extra for using the loo, the extra for booking a seat, the extra for getting on in front of the scrum (unless they bus you to the plane in which case the money you paid is wasted), the extra for sitting together, the extra for taking on a suitcase, the extra for booking in at the airport, the (soon coming) extra to book in on line (and use your own ink and paper to print the boarding card for which you also have to pay them), the extra for having all four engines working tax, the extra "in case you need a wheelchair" tax, I wonder if they'll charge you extra for "having a sexy trolley dolly" tax?
And I suppose that, instead of asking if you want "duty frees", scratch cards, microwaved sandwiches they'll ask you to stump up an extra tenner for a porn video as well (15 quid for a DVD).
((Cue all those who only paid a fiver for their last flight even though the minimum air passenger duty is ten quid so good old Ryanair pays you to get on the flight))

True - very true! BUT - so long as I regard Ryanair exactly as what they are - ie. a cheap and cheerful low-cost airline and expect nothing in return, I buy a cuppa at the airport before I fly, I take my own sandwich (no hardship there), and I opened a Halifax account SOLELY to get a Visa Electron card for booking flights, the fact is that I CANNOT get from East Midlands to Murcia or Alicante cheaper with any other airline!
Michael O'Leary is no fool - he gets some flack for some of the cock-eyed ideas he comes up with (most of which will never see the light of day), but the free pubicity he generates must be worth MILLIONS!

the extra for having all four engines working tax
I'd resent paying that hyper inflated tax Bob. The Ryanair fleet only have two engines

Yes Steve if you don't like paying the charges the best way is to try and avoid them. We booked recently to go over in July the flights cost us £50 each return and by using an electron card saved us £50. . We do on average about six trips a year so when you total up what you save it certainly makes getting an electron account worthwhile. Then as you say if you stock up with your own food and drink and only carry hand luggage, again considerable savings are made.Ryanair is a budget airline and doesn't pretend to be anything else but at the end of the day cheap deals are there to be had.I dislike all the add-ons as much as anyone else but I do believe Ryanair does make it possible for many people to travel who otherwise could not afford it.

So, the rotten sod's too tight to stick the other two engines on, then? Must have heard the old joke
"This is your pilot, sorry but we've lost an engine. Don't worry though, we can quite happily go on 3 engines but our flight time will increase by 20 minutes"
10 minutes later
"Pilot again, sorry but we've lost another engine. Don't panic as it;s quite safe, just means our flight time will increase by another 20 minutes"
Yada yada yada
"Sorry, down to one engine. Really very safe but it means we'll have another hour on our journey"
Passenger "Hope he doesn't lose that last engine or we'll be up here all day"
Seriously, though, shop around. I find that BMI from East Mids, and occasionally Thomsonfly, outdo Ryanair on prices quite often. EasyJet seems a bit more though. Plus, I hate the flight times on Ryanair, especially coming back from Alicante. Not sure how long the Electron card will enable you to make "free" bookings but make the most of it while you can.

Just as another example, I have booked with BMI for the end of April for a fortnight. Advertised price was 19.99 each way so about £80. After they stick on the extras etc it comes to £96 for the two of us including debit card charge etc but no cases or sitting together (BMI gives you seat allocations anyway so it is pretty good.)
Ryanair. Cost going is zero (yep no pounds and no pence) coming back is £4.99. Great, thought I'd missed a good deal. Just for interest went through the booking process and, with debit card charge, no pre-booked seating, no priority boarding and no cases and it comes to £111 and change. ?????? As this is an April departure, there was no charge for booking online but this will change in May (they didn't add a charge for coming back) so that would be an extra £20 on top.
So, it certainly does pay to shop around (plus the Ryanair coming back at 6 in the morning is a right killer).
Edited to say:
Please don't think I'm whinging about these prices as I think they are brill. It costs more to get a train from Leicester down to London sometimes and i certainly remember the only way to go some years ago was through a travel agent so all the fees on top were extortionate. I reckon that it is cheaper now to fly to Spain than it was 15 years ago so no quibbles on the cost. I just wish they would be upfront with their costings. If they said a return flight to Spain was 55 quid or so I would think that was a great deal. It's just the annoying fact that they keep advertising on telly for "1000s of flights for £10" and it works out at 75 or so. Just be honest about it as, I think, the law on advertising dictated a year or so ago? Same with the above example of FREE but actually cost £43 for one way BEFORE the credit card charge, the online booking charge, the suitcase charge etc. (Mind you, still found it cheaper last time to buy light fittings in UK, pay the suitcase charge and take them over than it was to buy the light fittings in Spain and my £9.99 double continental quilt from Asda was well worth the suitcase charge.) Ryanair have announced that, from 1st May 2009, passengers booking in on line will pay a £5.00 / €5.00 fee for booking in online.
From 1st October 2009, passengers will no longer be able to book in at the airport and will have to book in online. The cost will be the same 5 pounds for printing out your own boarding card. If you have luggage, you will have to drop your case off at a luggage drop off point at the airport at a cost of £20/€20 per bag. This is in addition to paying the £5/€5 online booking charge.
Flights booked before this time will not be charged the online booking fee.
So. Gotcha (well, not really cos you escaped this fee by booking now)
And, by the way, that's a fiver there and a fiver back so 20 quid for two of you to use your paper, your ink and your internet time to print out your own boarding cards. And they accuse Gordon Brown of quantative easing!!

Thanks for that. I think I will sort out all my trips for 2009 and book them before 1st May!!. We are also paying an extra tax of €10 for leaving the country from 1st April, it was introduced in the last budget.
