Hi Tamsin
I think the place on Irish Town you mention is Cafe Rojo - run by Annette & her husband (can't remember is name right now!) They used to work in Cafe Solo. Yes, the food is good there - in fact that's where El Patio was situated many years ago before Casemates Square was transformed.
La Mamela is another great place to eat as you say, and there are new restaurants opening in the new Marina.
Celebrity restaurant and wine bar (which is managed by the same people who manage Charlie's and The Ship in Marina Bay) is one of the new one's which has a good menu and is quite reasonable. There is also a new Mexican and a Chinese, as well as many others opening soon (Pizza Express etc)
Don't forget Gaucho's - the place to eat for a decent steak - they guy who owns this used to own Bianca's on the Marina many years ago too ....
I also have to mention Simon's - only about 5 or 6 tables inside - also run by a man and wife team. Reservations are recommended here too, and I think they are now only open in the evenings....but the food is very good.
As for the restaurants on Queensway Marina, well, they are getting a bit better.
The Waterfront used to be owned by the guy who started Biancas but it hsa now been sold on ... the food just isn't that good in my opinion!
Casa Pepe is also on Queensway Marina and they do excellent fish and steaks there, but I find they like to cover everything in a thick sauce....
The Boat Yard is the newest restaurant on Queensway and whilst the food is very good the portions are tiny and the prices sky high!
Claus on the Rock was a very good restaurant but is currently under refurbishment and will re-open with the name 14 Queensway ... lets hope the quality stays the same...
But, for me, El Patio is still the best place in Gib - you must try it if you like good food and service.

Thanks for that, you have confirmed what I had hoped, that there are infact decent places to eat in Gib.  I always go to Gib for the shopping when I am staying in Spain, but have always struggled on trying to find somewhere good to eat.  When I am next there I shall try El Patio as recommended.  I ususlly tend to eat midday and I am assuming that it is open daytime?

Hi Laurdan
Yes El Patio is indeed open lunchtimes - although it is closed on either Monday's or Tuesday's. (I'll find out for which day for definate later and post it here). You shouldn't need to make a reservation at lunchtime, but if you want the number anyway just pm me.
I'm sure you will not be disappointed ... hmmm ... I hope you enjoy as much as I always do...

Oh yeah! Bloody hell, I thought I'd posted an update to this thread last year!

Erm .... ok ..... Update!

We went to the Caleta Hotel and dined at Nuno's Restaurant .... and I must admit, the food was lovely, the presentation very good, excellent views and the bill .... a bit pricey for what we had, however it was worth it to see the look on Dad's face. I remember I had the 'Filetto con Pesto' and it was fab!

We had a very nice evening!

Although I must remember to take Smiley's wallet with me next time.

I would recommend the clipper pub in Irish town, especially the steak and ale pie.

Hi Cazzy

I agree that the Clipper has good food - the portions are massive and as it's pub grub as opposed to a restaurant it's pretty reasonably priced. I eat there for lunch around 3 to 4 times per week - exellent value, and all food is home made. I've honestly never had a bad meal there in around 10 years or so....

I have to say though, the best thing on the menu is the bbq spare ribs (£8 massive portion) - the sauce is simply gorgeous and the meat just falls off the bone. Now I know what I'll be having for lunch today ... hmmm .... their spag bol at £6 is particularly nice too, as are their home made pies as you mentioned!
