Well Karensun, you whetted our appetite and we had to come along and see what it was all about. We eventually found El Raso (no an easy task) and then toured around the estate until we saw an unlikely gathering. We thought it was either a group of devil worshippers meeting up or the bowling group, luckily it was the latter.

We had a wonderfully friendly welcome from absolutely everyone and a quick lesson. We opted to spectate today and went around with one group. We are hooked and will be coming along on Thursday morning for out initiatiation.

For anyone wondering about this, my recommendation is that you should definitely give it a try and you'll also be hooked. Thanks also to all the lovely people who made us feel completely at home.

Irene

Thats incredible, Irish Road Bowling in Spain...

I thought it was more or less limited to just 2 counties in Ireland, Armagh and Cork and they are miles apart.

I remember this as a kid on Sunday afternoons groups of men hurling Bullits down country lanes, plenty of betting going on on the sidelines.

Brilliant news, there must be some queer looks from anyone passing.

Hi Irene

You shouldn't have had any trouble finding El Raso as I emailed you directions some time back.

The group are narf knocking hell out of our urb's curbs with their heavy balls.

They play down by the La Mata salt lake & the area was originally going to be built on so there are roads & roundabouts, electric boxes, lamp posts etc.

Actually there's meant to be more building going on in due course because of a faux pas by Guardamar town hall.  As they originally granted permission for building homes south of where the last homes are then refused after all the builders had done all that work (it's classed as a natural park area) they can't afford compensation so have allowed a section full width across for more homes. This was in a newspaper a while ago.

Yes More I know you sent directons but we still got lost! It's a lifetime habit of ours.

I am led to believe that the area where the bowls is played cannot be built on because it's too close to the salt lakes. I didn't notice any damage done to the curbs though.

Karensun: I don't know why we didn't meet you. We went around with a group to see what it was like. We'll ask for you on Thursday.

Owners there were also led to believe this, Irene, but then this IS Spain. Owners are arguing about it with Mrs Marylène Albentosa Ruso, Mayor of Guardamar, who has sent a letter to the Presidents and delegates (of El Raso) who attended the last meeting in February concerning the regional governments plans for development of the La Laguna at la Mata and the area surrounding El Raso.

The following was posted in the urb's community site on Feb 8 by an owner who, I understood, stood in the elections. (Whether or not he was elected I don't know).

I was told only yesterday, and having browsed all the Spanish press, I
have found confirmation of the greatest fear of many residents. We
have been SOLD OUT..
It seems that 15 hectares, that is 150,000 m2 of land, that is ALL the
land at the bottom has been approved for change of use to URBANISABLE
as of 6th Feb.
This is in addition to a huge area surrounding the Salt lakes on the
Torrevieja side.(360,000 m2 in total)
I have e-mailed Marie Carmen Verdu leader of the PP at the Town Hall
for her comments.
It would "appear" at this stage that there are several reasons for
this change overturning of "Protection Status". Main protaganist would
appear to be "Mayor Pedro" from Torrevieja, but undoubtedly the
inability to settle the court case for compensation to the developer
of El Raso, Pedrera, must be a major factor.
Either way, it is likely many years before anyone would have the will
to even start building again.
I was warned last year that "Ayuntamiento" land was possibly in line
to be built on but this is only 10% of the whole development, which
Pedrera had to give to the Council in the beginning. 14 hectares is
enough to possibly build another 500 houses.
I will see what response is given.

Meanwhile anyone who can read Spanish can read in the following link:
http://www.grupotortuga.com/Nueva-recalificacion-urbanistica

There were two groups bowling when we watched them, one went some minutes ahead of the other one.

This street bowling looks like a nice relaxing pastime for which friends can receive some gentle exercise, socialise and watch the world go by. However I have witnessed the dangerous dark underbelly of this so called leisure pursuit and some of the shady characters that partake !!!!!!!!!

I believe the Germans also have a sport / pastime similar to this as I found out to my cost and theirs !!!!!

One afternoon whilst in the Cabo de Palos area I arrived at a show home at 1:30pm only to find it closed (they normally shut between 2pm and 4pm). With two free hours on my hands I though this was a perfect opportunity to drive up the La Manga strip and have a look around.

Having gone through the couple of hundred sets of traffic lights on the strip I reached the end,  and turned round.  It was out of season and the roads and strip in general were deserted. As I was riving down the road I noticed something very small and round zooming down the road towards me. As it got closer it looked like a  ball of some kind and as it zoomed fully into view it hit something in the road, bounced up and hit my car with an almighty thud.

I stopped the car and jumped out to inspect the damage. Fortunately the metal ball had hit a rubber skirt that sat under the spoiler, knocking it loose.

I looked round thinking where the heck had this come from. There was no construction taking place nearby and even so it was siesta time, I had not passed any lorries or machinery that it could have fallen from, the only thing was a group of senior citizens way off in the distance, walking in my direction. I picked the ball off and headed to meet them to see if they knew anything about it.

When I got to them, I got out of the car (metal ball in hand) to be greeted by cries of disdain in German. When the realised that I was British they angrily asked why I had their ball. I explained what had happened, the damage that had been caused and what would they like to do about it? I was amazed to find that they all agreed (about a dozen of them) that they had never hit a car before, I should have been looking where I was going and it was my fault. They wanted their ball back, end of conversation.

Obviously I realized that I was not going to win this one and with the damage to my car seemingly easily repairable I decided that the best course of action was to give the ball back, however I was not going to give them the satisfaction of handing it directly back to them, so with one big swing of my arm I sent it back ff down the road at great velocity (there was no traffic - trust me). With a smug grin, I pointed towards the rapidly disappearing ball and said "there you go" only in horror to watch it deflect off a raised manhole cover, hop over the kerb and straight into the Mar Menor, disappearing like a depth charge (no pun intended). En mass the bowlers turned towards me open mouthed in disbelief.

Needless to say I was in my car and beating a hasty retreat before I think it had clicked with them what had just happened. The Audi garage charged me €24 for a new clip to secure the spoiler leading edge on the car, so I suppose our German friends had the last laugh after all.

I hope you El Raso posse are a friendlier bunch, than the La Manga crew?

PS. It will be a real shame if they do develop the waterside area of El Raso. I think that it is one of the Urbs. that has got it just right, not to over developed, wide tree lined roads, plenty of green areas, a good little commercial centre and yet close to great beaches and Guardamar. Even if planning is given it will be a few years before the builders or bankers are brave enough to invest again.

Great story, love it!

I only know 2 of the El Raso bowlers, they seem friendly enough!

Hi first euro, that was so descriptive, I was there with you.

These bowlers are very passionate about the game but the balls are lethal at the speed they go at. There are loud shouts of 'ball coming' & you keep out of the way or ............................ on your head be it, literally.

We've followed the bowlers around at times. They are there from around 11:30am Thursday & Sundays.

On El Raso it's certainly looking good these days with so much greenery & beautiful flowers. I'll post some photographs for you to see. We have a wonderful view of the lake from our solarium.

NO JOKES ABOUT HIGH TIDE, PLEASE !!

I am one of these............................................... 'However I have witnessed the dangerous dark underbelly of this so called leisure pursuit and some of the shady characters that partake !!!!!!!!!'

Yes.................you should ALL beware in case you are zonked by a flying ball ( or bus or plane or person or ANY moving object ). Perhaps it would be a good idea NOT to visit El Raso on Sundays at 11.30am or Thurssdays at 10.30am just in casr you meet any of these 'shady characters' ??????

Please, no one read this and think I am offended by any postings, just rather amused at the 'interest' Irish road bowling and it's participants has caused!

Just editing this so no one gets the idea that I DO NOT want anyone to come and see or join in with our Irish Road Bowling!!.........................my remarks above were written toungue in cheek...........................we are NOT shady, just friendly and most of us have a really good aim ( usually ! )

OK Acapulco.........................ask Irene&Alan who joined us this morning to play their first game!! I partnered Alan and Irene was on the same team too. Unfortunately because I had a dental appointment, I could only play one round but both Irene and Alan seemed to be enjoying themselves and there was lots of laughing and chat.

I didn't see any 'shady' characters or 'dark underbelly'.............................perhaps I was looking in the wrong place ??

I would urge you all to give it a try. It was great fun, excellent exercise (I'm told we walked approximately 4kms) and no prima donnas!!!! Oh and no broken curbs or pavements.

We'll be back!

Irene

Rumour has it that some serious gambling has been going on at El Raso. I believe quite a few coffee cream chocolates have changed hands ( or should it be mouths?)
