Driving to Spain

Hi Guys,

Am currently looking into driving to Spain in the summer for 2 weeks and need to hire a car to do so. We will be driving from Kent in the UK down to L'Escala near Barcelona and am just after some basic info, e.g. the best routes to take, likely costs etc. We are hoping to do the drive in a day so am looking for the quickest route possible but not one that costs a fortune in tolls.
 
I am currently planning to catch a ferry to Dunkirk at around 2AM and then start the drive down from there.

I am also interested to know the best place/recommendations for car hire to do the drive as I was hoping to pay somewhere in the region of £250-£300 for the hire for a mid sized car but every website and comparison site I have been on is coming out nearer the £500 mark once the eurpoean cover & additional driver are added on which seems quite a lot!

If anyone has any help/advice/info then it would be much appreciated.

why dont you just fly and hire a car at barcelona airport

We have done that before but we are moving out to Spain in a few months and so we want to drive this time so we can get familiar with the route down for when we actually move & also so we can take some of our belongings down that we couldnt if we flew!

Lee you won't get it much cheaper as the hire companies will always want extra for you taking it abroad.

Quickest route go to www.viamichelin.co.uk put in the departure place and the arrival place it will give you the cost of fuel and cost of tolls before you put in those details change your preferences for the type of car and the fuel cost
