Holidaymakers' anger at Spain's new sun lounger charges

Families heading for the Spanish sun are in for a shock . . . some holidaymakers will have to pay for their own hotel’s sunbeds.

Many a Brit will be throwing in the towel this summer.

But this time, their great rivals the Germans are not to blame for the surrender.

With the bottom falling out of Spain’s economy, it’s the Spaniards who are now charging for British bums on loungers.

For the first time in Majorca, some hotel guests are being asked to pay for their hotel-owned sunbeds.

One hotel in popular Cala d’Or is charging a staggering seven euros – almost six quid – for use of loungers.

The hotel is charging guests for beds on the spectacular spot overlooking the bay of Cala Ferrera.

Just down the road at Cala Gran, guests will be charged two euros a day for the privilege of their poolside position.

North families say its costing them a small fortune, but they fear it is a sign of things to come.

Mum-of-three Margaret Ramsay said: “I know Spain is in a bad way financially, but they should not take it out on British families by charging these prices.

“We have been visiting Majorca for more than 20 years and we have never been charged for using hotel sunbeds.

“They should be in with the price.”

And it is no better on the beaches either.

Hundreds of families who sat on the loungers on the Majorcan sands last week stormed off in protest when told the price of getting a seat.

Two beds and a parasol will set you back 13 euros a day, that’s about £11.

Margaret, from Sunderland, said: “There were some angry scenes.

“Almost every family that plonked themselves down on the beds got off when told they had to pay five euros each.

“All week, dozens of families were simply lying on the sand next to empty sunbeds.”

In popular Palma Nova, two beds and a thatched parasol on the beach will set you back 13.50 euros a day.

Spain is in a bad way, but they should not take it out on us

Nice thought, facilities should be provided free!
Who has to buy the beds for you to lie on, the thatched umbrella you lie under, who pays for the repairs and replacement every year, the rent for that part of the beach, the cleaning of the beach or pool area?
Try using a sail boat for one hour. The sea is there so it is free, the wind is there so it is free, it's the bit you are in that has to be paid for and repaired.
Buy an inflatable Lilo chair or bed and find somewhere you won't be charged to sit.
Other than that, build it in to the cost of what is still a cheap holiday.

Of course anything that was free now appears expensive when we have to pay!
Reality is prices are about 1/2 what we pay back home.
Food and drinks are exceptionally lower and generally the weather is so much better.
Bus fares are really good value ... Yet I hear people complaining about €2.20 from Airport to centro estacion.
Its a great place still to relax and relate.... Happy holidays...

We are off to Cala Dor for a weeks break soon, so we shall see if our hotel is charging for sun beds or not. However, it occurs to me, if a family of four take two weeks holiday, and want to use sun beds every day, costing 7 euros each, that comes to a total of 392 euros. Most families go on holiday on a budget, I simply cannot imagine that people will pay this ridiculous additional cost, and even if they did, something else would have to give, food, drinks, excoursions, or car hire. Hotel owners will soon realise customers only have so much money, and squeezing more out of them will result in holiday makers booking somewhere else, possibly Turkey for example? This is a very risky strategy, people will vote with thier feet. Hell, if hotel owners charge for all facilities that need care and maintenance, how long will it be before they charge us to swim in the pool, or walk on the grass or Heaven forbid use the lavatory? Get real.

My partner and I are going for a weeks holiday next Wednesday to the Sentido Tucan in Cala D' or with Thomas Cook. We were flabbergasted to receive an email last night from Thomas Cook asking us to pay 50 euro for the week for sun loungers. We have been to this hotel for the past three years and have never been asked to pay for sun loungers. To be honest I don't know how this could ever work. I think if Spain's economy is struggling then they will have to look at other ways to recoup monies, afterall we are helping their economy by going to their country on holiday and spending our hard earned cash! The other problem that will arise especially in Cala D'or is that everyone will just go to the small coves which will be jam packed!!! - nightmare, not looking forward to it.
