REGULATIONS ON the use of mobility scooters in Benidorm will come into full effect in November with the aim of putting a stop to the abuse of such vehicles by individuals who are not disabled or elderly. Many of the hirers of these scooters use them at high speed and also under the influence of alcohol, causing a nuisance to other road users and pedestrians.
The new regulations will include for the first time various restrictions that prohibit rental to tourists who do not have a disability - accredited permanent or temporary - or who are under 55 years of age.
It will also be required that hire companies carry full civil liability insurance to cover any damage caused by users to other vehicles, property and also public roads. It is estimated that as many as 500 mobility scooters are rented daily in Benidorm.
