The National Transplant Organization in Spain
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 @ 11:11 PM

Today, Rafael Matesanz has been interviewed on radio; he is the Director of the National Trasplant Organization.

Rafael Matesanz has talked about the “Spinal plan”; he explain that it is “a reconsideration of the whole system of donation and transplantation of blood stem cells”; he and his team stdy how to search spinals, how to donate….

Spain has made a big effort in donor recruitment through the umbilical cord. There are two ways for donations: through umbilical cord and through spinal.Spain is the first country, in Europe, and the second country, in the world, of number of umbilical cords. Then, one, between the nine umbilical cords that there are registred in the world, it is in Spain (60.000, in total).

Matesanz explain that the other important way is Spinal.Spain is the eighth country, in Europe, and the sixteenth country in the world, in number of Spinals. But Rafael says that it can be improved.

The Doctor Matesanz says that the Spanish transplantation system is very a very robust one; but it notes the crisis; this issue concerns, because, for example, Portugal was a country that copied the Spanish transplantation system and, now, the donation has fallen there.

He also says the success of the NTO is “to fly low”.Although this Organization depends of the Ministry of Health, the NTO works as an unit, throughout Spain; the 17 autonomous regions in Spain are very well coordinated, with a simple way, unpretentious policies. The NTO is a very little organization –in it there are working less than 40 persosns--.In this sense, another thing that leads to success is Credibility. Each autonomous region brings something different; but all of them go in the same direction.

Matesanz says that the response of the families of deceased, in organ donation, reaches 85 per cent.

Rafael  Matesanz ensures that in Europe and in Spain, nobody can be transplanted:But, people from rich countries, in Europe, go to countries, like Pakistan, in order to buy an organ, for example a kidney.

The official website of this organization is:  www.ont.es

At the end of the interview, Rafael  Matesanz choosed the song “Let it be”, by Beatles, because this group was very important in the youth of Matesanz. Also, he says that concretely this song talks about difficulties, like we are living today.

The Beatles - Let it be

Best regards,

Luis.
