Remarkable Stories from a Spanish Bar

For you to enjoy the unbelievable stories and unforgettable characters of a Spanish Bar! Some so outrageous that you couldn't make them up !

Let me make something very clear !
Sunday, February 24, 2013 @ 11:07 AM

I would like to clear a few things up as it appears some sensitive souls feel I am bad mouthing expats. This is not my intention.

I feel maybe I haven't painted a very good picture of where we live !
Seron is a stunning village in between Albox and Baza, it is very Spanish !
The expat community is very small here, that is one reason we chose it, we wanted to live in Rural Spain !

But it has it's downsides, you are thrown with other expats that if you meet in any other situation you would be polite to but not spend time with. Here at the beginning we could not speak Spanish ( only ourselves to blame!). As we knew people here, we became involved  in that circle, because it was easy. I am quite sure that I am not everyone's cup of tea and in a different situation they would not have befriended me !

I have many friends who are expats, most don't live in Serón (some do!) but they are the people I chose to be friends with and who chose me, it's a two way street.

I had not meet any of these people before we had the bar and am extremely grateful to have these amazing people in my life ! However the majority of the expats we meet at the begining have proven not to be friends at all and have caused us no end of problems, so yes I am anti them, and if you decide to continue reading, maybe you think I am right to be !!

As for living here, as I have said before, I would not change it, maybe make a few different decisions, but change where we live never ! Change the friends I have, expats and Spanish, no don't think so, they are the people I want in my life and as long as they want me in their lives I am here !

Living in a community with more expats I can see would be easier as you will have more choice, however I am sure that some of you have had the same issues, where you have stepped off the plane and into a circle of people that just aren't your type and over time have moved away from them !

Here's to living a happy life with only people that you want in it !

Hi Sam,
love the blog, I`m sure people know what you were
trying to say about expats. It`s the same in any walk of life. I work in a large organisation, a colleague once remarked that if he were to meet half the staff outside he would cross the street! All we had in common was work, same with expats, common denominator, country of origin.
Keep typing.

Absolutely, Joanniemac! My thoughts exactly.

Sam, there will always be at least one person who takes offence when you write openly about events and people you have encountered. Just carry on being honest in your writing. It's what makes it so readable....

Looking forward to your next post. I think you are right and you have encouraged me to put more effort into learning Spanish. We are all attracted to being friends with different people for many reasons, ex pat or Spanish, so I don't want to put myself in the position that I can only communicate with a small number of people.
I would hope that when I move to Spain I will form meaningful, close friendships with both expats and Spaniards, and I am under no illusion about how difficult that will be.

I'm loving your blog and look forward to reading more. You have a right to say it how you see it and not conform to others rose tinted views. Keep it up!

to right Sam. Respect the country you are in, respect the people whether of their own country or not & they will respect you. Show no respect & you deserve none.
Always been a "fan" of yours Sam just keep going - well done.
