Magaluf image overhaul: No pub crawls, street drinking, late opening or sex in public
Wednesday, January 7, 2015 @ 3:07 PM

HOLIDAYS for young revellers in Magaluf are set to be very different from those they have experienced in the past - councillors and MPs have launched a series of rules of conduct in light of the string of scandals which hit the resort district last summer.

No pub crawls, no drinking alcohol in the street, no ticket touts, tough sanctions for bars who serve alcohol to under-18s, stay open too long, make too much noise or allow too many people in, and more police presence are on the cards for summer 2015.

The local council of Calvià, the inland town which the coastal enclave of Magaluf comes under - as it is not a town in its own right - has called for the central government's interior ministry to send in riot police for the forthcoming beach season.

Authorities also want British police on duty, since most of the young holidaymakers are from the UK, do not speak the language and are more likely to pay attention to officers of their own nationality, the council believes.

A bye-law banning the consumption of alcoholic beverages outside of bars, restaurants or residential homes will be passed ahead of the summer, and it looks likely pub crawls - organised by excursion companies or otherwise - will become illegal.

Firstly let me say Magaluf is not on my bucket list.I am 76 next month and yes I would like to have sex in the street (or anywhere else for that matter).
But being serious, why do the UK youngster go and spend their GBP there? Obviously the attraction is what the authorities are trying to ban, take them away and they will spend their GBPs in Greece or elsewhere. Is this Spainish once again shooting themselves in the foot?

Hello, you 76-er....I am from Iceland but in my travellig all around the world and especially in Spain which I got a house and been around for 25 years..- I know how youngsters from UK behave and that's not worth any money to be visiter of. UK-youngsters are fleeing something from their country (I think) and act like a pig under influence and think they may do it whenever and wherever they like. and have been a problems for long time in Benidorm, Mallorca..and all around Spain. That is what people see,I see and have seen for more than 25 years in Spain. - Sorry for maybe wrong written english apart, but my mind is correct.

Hi marelison,
firstly no worry about your written English, I wish my written Spanish was as good.
Secondly I would like to take you to task about Benidorm, I do not believe"Gods waiting room" is a magnet for young Brits.I understand heart attacks are more of a problem among visitors from the UK than pub crawling, fornicating youngsters.
I assume that you are a pensioner, receiving a good pension from your country of origin So to say " I know how youngsters from UK behave and that's not worth any money" is very easy with a full stomach.
I do not know the history of Magaluf but I assume the original owners of bars, discos and hotels where Spanish and who in turn provided and still provides work for the locals.
Like you I have been around in Spain for twenty plus years and we where in fact the only Brits living in the Almanzora Valley area of Spain for a few years, unfortunately our savings ran out and I started building houses for ex-pats. in doing so I ruined our little piece of heaven, not because of my clients but because of the illegals their money attracted.Everything has a price "quando tienes hambre pan duro es bueno".

Hello Alan,

Thank you Alan for promt respond. - This is not meant to be bad words from my side, I just said what I have seen and calculate out because of that. - No, I am not a pensioner yet, but sure will be after few years. Everybody (I assume) can be with a full stomach..but it don't have to a beer in the morning, beer at noon and then beer at night again. - I am not talking "through" money or because of my wealthness, i'm just talking general. - Seems to me, for what I know by my self, that many people come to Spain (even Icelanders) with unfinished problems from their country and think that the grass is greener behind a new fench, but it isn´t. - You know what I mean...Sun, beach and beer and all that and all problems blown away ! - Pero, un frase bueno o sabeduría..."Quando tienes hambre....." Que correcto y que verdad..! - Muchas gracias por esto !!

Saludos cordiales, Alan.

Hi marelison,
It looks as if no one else wants to enter this debate.
I think you have misunderstood me, the empty stomachs I refer to are the Spaniards who will be out of work if young Brits stop spending money in Magaluf.
Regards.
Alan

Yes. I in my younger days visited the likes of Magaluf and thought there wasn't enough life there.! Strange how it suddenly took off.. I can't say I was a goody, goody myself and always had a hell of a laugh. Yes I drank too much, danced all night but didn't take drugs, didn't lie out on the streets doing all those things with male genitals in front of all and sundry though did do things that I regretted later. Then when my young son went to the likes of Magaluf with all his mates I was horrified when he came back and told me just some of the stories of the goings on. (Broad minded as I like to think I am) I was saddened that they were allowed to do that by those bar owner's who would be rubbing their hands together just waiting for the 'Brit's' to empty their pockets and make them rich bunnies. As you say Alan, rich bar owners keeping Spanish people in employment. Vicious circle eh?

My wife and I actively avoid areas of Spain where there are large concentrations of drunken ill behaved British as there actions make both of us ashamed of being British.

This is an option we all have.
