Spain sees gamble in vision of 'Sin City'

A Euro Vegas in down-and-out Spain?

Depending on whom you ask, it could be heaven-sent or a deal with the devil.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson's dream to build Europe's first Las Vegas-style resort in Spain would certainly bring much needed relief to an economy lurching into another recession and struggling with sky-high unemployment.

But the millions that would rain down come with strings attached: Adelson wants Spanish laws bent so that gamblers can smoke inside the casinos and new zoning regulations allowing him to send buildings soaring above the skyline. And not everyone is thrilled about the idea of Spain hosting a European Sin City that could attract prostitution and mafia gangs - and add gambling addiction to the woes of already desperate Spaniards.

Still, Madrid and Barcelona are both vying to woo Adelson and the $22 billion he wants to invest to erect "Eurovegas" - an array of six casinos, 12 hotels featuring 36,000 rooms, a convention center, three golf courses, shopping centers, bars and restaurants.

The two sites being eyed in Madrid each cover an area equivalent to 1,000 football fields.

I believe that anyone who seeks in any way to frustrate the expenditure by someone who is offering a gift of employment, opportunity, income and a way to bring into the area in which this project is to be constructed, should be hung by their feet.

There will be no gangs fighting in the street or uncontrolled prostitution as the investors in properties which cost millions and millions as this project would cost could ill afford to have their investment tarnished, injured or diminished. They with the money such as the experienced Mr. Adelson will do all within his power and control, as will those with whom in the Spanish government he is working with...to be certain they maintain a positive family image, as exists now in Las Vegas.

Thus, what will come of it is thousands of new jobs, new opportunities, whilst it is being built, after it is built and operated...with great restaurants, shops, theatre, universities, schools, new 'occupied' homes, and all of the important qualities of life which a new city and new opportunities provide.

Please, Mr. Adelson...come, spend your millions, do it soon as possible, too. Those who now are striking because they cannot find work, setting cars afire, fighting with police and making a general disturbance...will find work, and opportunity that they cannot now find. This entire generation of unemployed youth will become paid workers...

If anyone think this is a bad thing, to find work, new opportunities, then the Spanish youth whose potential is not being realised will remain continuously uneducated and unemployed....and, even the seniors will find work, as in a environment which is based upon the flow of money, everyone will prosper.

And, my goodness won't that be just grand!

Or, would those who fear such a development continue to prefer to witness Spain's bonds being downgraded and fifty percent of their youth remaining unemployed?

Please, Mr. Adelson...start your architects drawing tomorrow, your construction engineers and designers...at work. We need you. We desperately need you!

With my respect to those who don't know better...about business and the way the economy of a nation works. Sorry, that you were not better educated. Nonetheless, this project is needed, and needs to be welcomed and started...very very soon!

I love Spain, even though I do not live there. However, it saddens me to see this lovely country in such financial straits. When casinos were built in my city, they brought jobs and money. I will visit again soon, probably to Barcelona, and wish to see things improved. Good Luck. Adios.
