Cristóbal Montoro: “The public would pay less tax if Spanish film stars paid theirs at home”

IF more famous Spanish film stars paid their taxes in their country of origin, the ordinary citizen would shell out a lot less, claims minister Cristóbal Montoro (pictured). When asked about what was being done to clamp down on fraud, drug-dealing and money laundering during a meeting in the Senate, Spain's head of tax affairs said efforts should be channelled towards the rich and famous. “We haven't had our own Gérard Dépardieu here – we haven't needed to, because some of our famous actors and actresses don't pay their taxes in Spain,” Montoro stated, in clear reference to the veteran French movie star who pointedly acquired Russian citizenship in protest over his native country's 'super-taxes' applied to the very rich.
