Can any of you good people who've already bough here give me some honest answers.  Part part our ideal lifestyle in Spain will be sampling some decent restaurants and the odd bar (we're mid-50s civilised people not irresponsible binge-drinkers just in case I've given the wrong impression).  Of course a glass or two of wine and driving don't mix so we'll need paces within walking distance.  Realistically how long does it take to walk from Novo Arcos into the central areas of Arcos?  And are there any bars or restaurants adjacent to the development.

Thanks.

Hi Lambert2,
Having just returned from 12 days in Arcos I can tell you a bit about getting around and facilities.  We had a hire car but would walk into Arcos for most things - shopping and eating.  This was because parking is not easy in Arcos and negotiating the narrow cobbled streets in the old town is not easy either!  Though the locals do it very happily and confidently!  We found we could walk into the main shopping/eating area of new town around Plaza de Espania in 10 - 15 mins.  However, the route in does involve a steep incline to start followed by a steep downhill walk and the reverse on the way back.  I certainly feel a lot fitter than when I went out to Arcos.  There are loads of bars (infact you pass a number en route into Arcos that we didnt try) and a number of restaurants.  We had some good meals at reasonable prices (some very reasonable).  The food is very spanish (!) - lots of fish and tapas but the usual fare of pizzas is available, though I'm pleased to say I didnt see a hamburger in sight!  If you're feeling fit a further uphill walk will take you up to the old town where there is quite a range of bars, cafes and restaurants tucked away around corners and in all sorts of unlikely places.  If you go to the tourist office (there are 2 in Arcos) they will give you an excellent map which shows you how easy it is to walk into town from the development.
We were told you can take a bus into town and we did see lots of buses but didnt quite manage to get to grips with which buses went where.
There were other restaurants and bars not too far from novos arcos going in the opposite direction to the town that were in walking distance but we havent, as yet, tried these.
Hope this is off some help.

Hi Lambert2.......Having walked to & from the Novo Arcos development ....I can tell you it is more suited to a mountain goat than genteel folk in their mid fifties...it is doable but is a slog ....not due to distance but ti the inclination of the hills you have to negotiate.......There appears to be a new road being put in from the development to the town which takes a new route which appears to be a much more acceptable gradient !!.......& should only take a few minutes to walk in to town.

There are several good eateries in town....the food is fresh & largely good quality for reasonable money......or until recently since the euro got expensive. The meat & fish are particularly good,Avoid the place on the right as you go up toward the plaza that advertises a 3 course menu for 6 euros!!...I tried it & it was diabolical........lesson learned.....you get what yopu pay for!!

A well known restaurant la convento recently cflosed up but there are stiil several other good ones.Cheers.Mallj.

Well I was bringing my hiking boots anyway, sounds like I’ll need them!  I knew a bit about the topography but that climb sounds tough.  Does seem like it might be worth the effort though.  Tapas and fish sounds like my kinda food. Yesterday was our 30th wedding anniversary and we went out to dinner here – to a tapas bar. Thanks malij & birdspan.

Hi again Lambert2....part of your query was about nearest resteraunts/bars....the publicity from Romanber says there will be these facilities on the Novo Arcos site in due course ......the facilities apparently include a turkish bath !!
There are local bars etc that probably do good tapas & possibly more quite close on the edge of Arcos but once the new road is done I imagine it will be better to walk to the centre....there are also some good places in the more modern part of town at the bottom of the hill around the gardens where Tourist Info is......
If you are a bit of a foodie Cadiz is well worth a visit....particularly to the fish market.....all manor of weird sea creatures & huge shark, sword fish & tuna.....the sea food goes very nicely with the local chilled vino blanco Barbedillo which is made in Sanlucar......Cadiz has many good places to eat too but avoid the obviously touristy though to be fair Cadiz retains it's Spanishness....if that's a word....& you need to speak at least a little of the lingo cheers..mallj.
