Hi All,

Just had 2 1/2 great weeks at thalassa apart from, what i found to be, a few over fussy rules regarding pool and tennis courts, anyway save that for the meeting.

One thing i keep finding is that i seem to get really big electricity bills. I have returned to one today for 70 euros for june and july and we only occupied for about 7 days in that period, all my others have been in the 60 euros amount and we dont occupy a lot in those periods.  I signed up for the highest level of electricity to avoid power cuts but seem to be paying a lot for my biils.  We do not rent out so try and keep our uses to a minimum we seem to get high bills.  Is it just me or is this the the norm and i am being tight.

Please let me know.

Thanks, Kris

I think electricity in Spain is in general expensive. We have a 1 bed apart which only has one a/c unit. Our bills are between €20- €40, not sure about this last couple of monts with rentals! Don't forget the standing charge that wil be applied which I think for 2 months in Spain is almost as much as a 1/4 in the UK. And of course the good news, that prices are going up there too!!

Has anyone had any luck speaking to the electricity company who provide our service. My bill really seems excessive this month... and just wanted to get things checked out.

Lynda

I have replied by email.

For everyone else's benefit, the figure quoted by Lynda is the connection charge.

Just like in the UK, there is a standing charge to the electricity company & the bills are paid every 2 months. (not monthly)

The pdf file on bank statements is the equivelant to a bill as it gives a full breakdown of usage & charges, following the meter reading by Portillo.

When ever you are on the complex you can read both the water and electricity meters yourselves. Just  ask Teo to open the cabinets to your property , which are the brick built units generally positioned in the centre of each block.

Today we received our bi monthly bill from Portillo and I analized the charges and compared them with a similar option in the UK
ie ;  Standing charge plus single rate per KWH .

It shows that the KWH rates in Spain are 15% cheaper than the UK but the Standing charge for 2 months would be equal to 8.78 euro's in the UK  against 18.887 in Spain. When you add the Duty and the Iva at 16%, against 5% in the UK  the result is a 20% increase on UK costs.

I would be interested to learn whether Portillo offer a rate per KWH without a Standing Charge.

Hi

Our bill over the past 12 months identifies electricity usage at a minimum of 80 euro's for 2 weeks use of apartment which does not include excessive use as we eat out most of the time and doesn't include air con or air con heating.

We took the highest option when completing as we thought anything lower would not be sufficient and would keep tripping.

Can anyone advise :

i.  if we reduced the kw/h would we receive cheaper bills?

ii. would Portillo let us reduce to a lower tariff?

ii.  what is the lowest rate which would be sufficient for a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment

Also, has anyone had a pre-pay meter installed who can recommend an installer, costings (for usage and installation) and where you obtain the coins for the meter.

Many thanks

Kaz & Bob

HI Kaz & Bob

We have a 2bed, 2 bath & we took the 5.75KW option which has proved to be sufficient with no outages due to oveload. We have on occasion had the cooker, dishwasher, tv & kettle all on at the same time!

Our rate per KW is 0.106888 & the bi-monthly standing charge is 18.88. That should allow you to compare with your bill to see if it is worth changing over. I believe that Portillo do allow you to switch to a different level.

The average amount for a 2 month bill has been 58 euros & that is with 16 weeks occupancy.  8 weeks of that was over the summer when air con was used & with most of that being rentals, I can't say whether it was used sparingly or whether they ate in or out. The 2 bills that covered June to Sept totalled 175 euros.

Therefore, if I only take the bills up to ?June the average falls to 45 euros per 2 month period with 8 weeks occupancy.

We haven't put in a pre pay meter so can't help on that one.

Noreen

Hi All

We plumbed for the higher electricity rate to try and avoid possible outages, which now seems to have been a bit over cautious. Therefore we would certainly be interested in having the tariff changed. Has anyone been successful in the process of changing to a lower electrify tariff with Portillo.

Cheers Ray

Hi

Understand from Charlotte at Portillo that its an easy process.  Take your id etc along to the Portillo office and they will arrange for it to be reduced - this will entail (I understand) them arranging for something to be changed at the box for your property.   I believe that the meters are all numbered, so it would probably pay to take this information along with you as well.   They will then also arrange for either a new direct debit to be raised or the existing one to be amended, can't remember what she said and as we're on the other side of the world at the moment I don't have the information to hand, sorry.

We aren't out in Spain at the moment, but next visit approx Easter next year, it will be one of our tasks.

Kaz
