Can anyone advise me on the most cost effective way of transferring regular monthly cash amounts from Britain to Spain?

Take a look at EOS General Spain Forums, there are 612 postings on transferring money to Spain, should get some more help on there.

We have Barclays account in UK, and took up Barclays international mortgage - I transfer money each month from UK to Spain, its converted into Euros at acceptable rate of exchange without attracting any fees.
