Emergency numbers

I was asked yesterday what I would do if one of us was taken ill while we were in Duquesa and I was quite shocked to answer "I don't really know!!" Can I just ask out there - what arrangements have you made in case you face an emergency? Margo

Hi Margo....if you pick up a copy of The Diary...there are useful telephone numbers for emergency medical treatment...our 999 equivalent is listed....it is also available on lne....suprisingly  called thediaryonline ........it has lots of local info...and we keep a copy in the apartment....you could always join the Helicopter Flying Doctor service...they do annual subscriptions as well as 'one offs' I think...

There is a new medical centre in Sabinillas which was recently opened in October this year ( the old one was situated by the Pharmacy in Sabi )...this notification was on Manilva Life...

We give all our friends a who stay there a list of numbers and the location map....and leave the details in a folder in the apartment too..

Hope you have no need to use anything more than a plaster an a couple of ibuprofen !!

I live on Arenal Golf, but also read your forum as of course we have been experiencing the same problems as yourselves over in Duquesa.

Re Health emergencies, there is an emergency operator on 112 who can put you in touch with an English speaking operator. You can use this number across Europe I believe. The Andalusian Health Service has a number much like the UK NHS Direct which gives you access to information in around 10 different languages. The number is 902 505 060.

Provided you have an E111 from The Department of Work and Pensions you can seek help from any Health Centre or Urgencias. Urgencias are a bit like a more local version of a hospital Accident and Emergency Department. It's useful to take a photocopy of the numbers side of the E111 card and a photocopy of your passport along with you to the Health Centre or Urgencias. Our Health Centre has a volunteer English speaking interpreter present for 3 hours each morniing.

Health care here is excellent. There is no overall prescription charge, but your medication will cost about 33% of the actual cost. This morning I took four prescriptions into the Farmacia ,including one for an antibiotic, and the total cost for all four was 11 euros.
