Between the 13th to 15th of FEBRUARY ORIHUELA GOES BACK TO THE MIDDLE AGE WITH the biggest ever Medieval Market.
The Councillor for Festivals, Mayte Valero, is excited about this years festival, David Costa, Spokesman for the government team said "we are approaching the festival of the 10th Medieval Market in the City of Orihuela which has established itself as one of the three most important markets of Spain and this year it’s bigger and better with lots more attractions."
This years market will have a total of 150 stalls and attractions, 50 more than last year, and will expands up to as far as the Church of Santiago. The Comparsas de Moros y Cristianos (Associations of the Moors and Cristians) will partizipate and also the Associations ADIEM, ADIF, Comercio Justo and Centro Ocupacional Oriol.
The Market will officially open this Friday February 13th at 11:30 with a procession from the City Council to the Plaza Marqués de Rafal, where the opening ceremony will include a spectacular show and a whole range of activities for the public. Another Inauguration Ceremony will take place on Saturday 14th at 11.30 in the Plaza del Carmen in charge of the ARMENGOLA 2008 (Representative of the Moors and Cristians 2008). The opening hours of the Medieval Market will be from 11.30 to midnight, with shows, workshops and activities during the day and night.
David Costa said that last year almost 100,000 people attended the Medieval Market and with the market being so much bigger this year, we expect even more visitors. "The setting of Orihuela is most appropriate for this type of attraction, and our historic heritage is the perfect setting to go back to medieval times. Orihuela will benefit completely from this weekend of leisure, the Medieval Market will offer fun for all the family fun, will attract thousands of people from everywhere, all the shops will open their doors and for the tourism industry it is a perfect publicity."
The tourism offices of Orihuela will remain open during the Medieval Market to answer any questions.
Falconry, flight bird workshops, Italian flag show, the Arab souk, dance presentations, food and drink tasting, horse tournament, craft workshops, demonstrations of typical medieval life can be found on the Medieval Market in Orihuela this year as their slogan says "one of the best in Spain."
