Hi newworld,

There are certain requirements for your car when driving through Spain and France if you go on the foreign office website then follow the links all the information is there. We did put the stickers on our headlights but they are really confusing and we weren't pulled for them being wrong as we stuck and hoped for the best - try your local car part place rather than Halfords or waiting til you get to the ferry terminal as really expensive. We did stop off - my advice is do not try and continue driving later than midnight as the road conditions are different to us. France is more expensive for tolls. The drive from Calais - Abbville - Rouen - Bordeaux - Biarritz - Madrid is a nicer drive than the one we took down which went via Paris and down to Barcelona. Rough timing is approx 18 - 20 hours  from start to finish. If your ferry is overnight you may be able to get down in one hit. Tolls are more expensive in France than Spain and I would look at about 60 Euros for all tolls through and we spent 177 Euros on diesel - again this is more expensive in France than in Spain - between 1.26 per gallon and 1.21 depending upon where you stop and about 1.08 - 1.11 in Spain. On the way down we stopped in a Holiday Inn Express at Granollers outside Barcelona right behind the race track they use for the F1 grand prix this cost us £49 for 4 of us in a family room (2 adults 2 children) and on the way back we stopped at an independant hotel and this cost us £127 including a meal - but there is and ETAP hotel in Biarritz which would be a good stop and I know ptan has stopped here. I think that is it any more info you need let me know.

Carla/dave
